History Hood Louvers of Interest (Sexy Hoods part II)

That was in High School!

 

I wouldn't wish the task of louvering one of these hoods on anyone! (But it turned out super bitchin'!)

 

Looks great! What headlights are those?

 

Thanks! The headlights are Bob Drake halogens. I opted for clear lenses as the fluted ones diffused the light too much.

 

I understand louvers in the hood and trunk lid if you don't have a floor in the trunk any place that needs air flow. But louvers in the roof I don't understand.

 

LOL the only car I ever had with a louvered roof just had a louvered roof. it was still drier then my motorcycle.

I started to say that I would probably not louver a roof today because of the form follows function thing but hell with it, in the summer it functions real well.

 

what a great thread, I had never seen inverted louvers and only saw the peaked one on an old sprint car in the late 50's. thanx to all that participated. I had my 66 Chevy hood punched, thinging less is more I had three rows of 3--2--1 done and I love it. coolio

Started as the same deal as decklids. to let out high pressure buildups in the cabin on Bonneville cars. Not very practical for street use, but looks absolutely bitchin'! No worse than idiots like me that drive a roadster year 'round, I guess....

Bet it would in the mid west! Out here they tend to get REAL hot REAL quick in the summer, but then EVERYTHING does!

 

My buddy has a bobber truck with lots of louvers, and his license plate reads "Louvers" ... And he had the plate louvered. You can still read it and it sits pretty low, so it has yet to draw any negative official attention. Probably just a matter of time.

 

What is a bobber truck?

 

Actually I was living in Redding Calif at the time. it was wet when it was wet and damp when it was not that year. LOL

They also work real well for letting heat out of an engine compartment. I plan on using the ones that will eventually adorn my sedan to keep the ice off my windshield. LOL

When I was younger I ran with a pretty rough crowd. A bobber was a chick, that performed certain uncomely acts for fun a profit. So if I was less informed than I am today in this new millennium I would think that a bobber truck is one that really sucks.

 

DaveyJones, Vintage truck, usually pre-1950, chopped, fenderless, radically shorter bed, really low, lotsa tire. At least that's how my bud builds them. Maybe you remember the Jimmy Shine truck ... That's a bobber. And porkandbeaner, his truch doesn't have a blower!

I think the idea on an LSR vehicle was that they were not sealed up well and it relieved the pressure. It is real old technology, a newer train of thought on it is that anything that can fill with air once it is full it is no longer a problem.

On a vehicle that doesn't do bad weather much but lives in a warmer climate sans AC could benefit from the louvered roof as it does promote air flow. leave the windows up open the vents and let the air pass through. The same principal as the Stude Lowey or the post war ford with the pop out back glass, open the vents pop the back glass open and let the air pass you as you fly down the highway.

Here is my 38 Ford Standard Coupe Hood. I tried to style the louvers like Tom Medley's 40 Coupe, which is my favorite for a 37-40 coupe.
Also a picture of the 38!

This is a 39 hood that I punched louvers in . Removed rear brace then reinstalled it.

 

I've always loved how louvers look, it's nice to finally have something suitable for louvering...

Great thread. I'm in Redding Ca. I was at a gathering of car guys and asked who knew of someone with a louvre press. Silence. I'm pretty sure I can find a shop in Sacramento but would like to find somebody closer. Any recommendations?
