Hey gentlemen, I'm looking at a '61 Ford Wagon (Galaxie) in a wrecking yard in Washington. The VIN plate has odd codes I can't find. The Trans code is R and the Axle code is 0. Any ideas???
Those don't correspond to any standard Ford identifiers; maybe this was a special order/fleet car. Some government agencies bought some strange cars, I'd look at the plant/DSO info to see if this was a special. Does the rest of the data plate agree with what you see?
That was my first thought too so I checked. It's a US wagon... Everything else matches fine. I had someone else come out and look too. Same answer without being prompted.

I'm assuming the OEM motor/trans is gone.. is the rear axle still in it? Make sure it's a 9" and check the ratio, Ford did have a few other ratios generally not available in cars, and did offer a 'heavy duty' rear axle as an option (very rare; I've seen one...) with a Dana centersection.
I'll go back Thursday and look. I'm close to finishing my '60 Sunliner and want to do a wagon. If it does have special options I'd find it more interesting to restore... I need to see what that R code is for the transmission means... LOL
Yes @bobss396 its the original plate. I'm tied up at work and will go get all the data Thursday and send it to you. I appreciate the help.
FIN, the vin#'s you are looking for were not used until 1968. Prior to '68 vin# were nothing more than company S/N and identifiers. 1968 the government mandated that manufactures use ,the now universal "Vehicle Identification Number". .............................. Jack
