History 64/65 Comets old drag cars lets see pictures

My uncle was Mike Benz, the driver of the Hairy Canary. He introduced me into drag racing when I was 7 or 8 years old. I took quite a few trips to Raceway park in Englishtown. Uncle Mike passed away in 1993 but I recently was at my aunts house and she has an album with about 35 pictures, some of which I have uploaded into an album on this site. In the first photo in the grandstands at Englishtown, I am on the right with John Geists son Jackie. Also I am 5th from the left in the picture with all the kids on the car carrier. That was taken in front of my moms house. Some other pictures show the development of the car even down to the stages of painting that really cool logo on the door. I really appreciate you posting about the video taken at ATCO. I could watch that video over and over. Any other cool information or stories that anyone might have would really be appreciated.

 

My brother saved this car from the crusher years ago. Don't now much about it or its history. Maybe you guys might. Car is from the San Antonio,TX area.

 

Good story anybody remember which cross ram that is on the small block and how good it worked?

 

Had a scary veterens day ( evening ) high winds destroyed my brothers building housing 7 cars including the stroppe built 64 bfx comet , fortunately just a couple 1/2 inch long small cracks in hood at right front corner of bfx . It was at far left of the line of cars incuding (from right ) a 64 cyclone , 69 boss 302 ,70 boss 302 , 53 f100 , 76 bronco , 65 cyclone

Glad things were not hurt worse than they were....

 

Wow! That could have been really disastrous! Even if there was damage to the cars they could have been destroyed completely.
Or worse yet someone could have been hurt or killed.
I am just not a fan of pole buildings for just that reason.
Does that '64 have an original glass hood or a repro?

It's amazing there wasn't more damage to the cars , we were very lucky . The bfx has all of its original fiberglass . I was in process of getting bids on a 2x6 stud frame building when this happened

Does the b/fx have the stroppe Shock tower modification?

Hope this hasn't been posted before. I haven't been around these parts lately.

 

The 65 afx has aluminum inner fender panels and straight axle installed by stroppe(still intact) , 64 bfx came with stock shock towers and suspension but was cut up and towers removed and straight axle added within first few years of its life I'm sad to say

Maybe that was a "twisted leaf" conversion. Only way there would be room to run headers thru the towers.

 

You can see from the same article, it's a stock front end

 

If it was a "Twisted Leaf" car there wouldn't be any shock towers though.

That was one crazy set of headers!Phew!

I have seen better pictures of that car!! Stock type front suspension,headers were a study in patience!!! ROY.

 

Must have been like threading a needle getting those tubes through there....And I thought the Tubular Automotive headers I've got were a tight fit....Looks like I've got it better than I thought.

I can see why so many Ford/Merc products ended up with an axle under the front of them.

On my 65 Comet with stock front suspension and a 418W,I took the back two tubes out through the fender,gives you more room around the engine and engine bay!! ROY.

 

That's sort of how mine work Roy.One tube actually goes outside the frame rail on each side,and it fees up a ton of room Ike you wouldn't believe.

It all makes me wish Ford had put the "Twisted Leaf" front suspension into regular production though....Would have made our live a whole lot more pleasant,and you,me,and thousands of other gear heads would have a lot fewer scars from skinned knuckles and burned hands.

I don't know if any of the factory Comets ran a setup like this,but I saw some pics of Brannan's Falcon recently that showed a flanged section midway down the primary tubes,so that half the header slips in from above,and half slips in from below.

Pretty complicated to fab.
