Here are some pics of the car, taken in April of '48. #1, is the first time out of the shop. #2, is the first time on the track (Portland Speedway) Blackie Blackburn was the mechanic. I am sure Les was killed at Portland. Les Anderson 1.jpg Les Anderson 2.jpg

Some years back, another pic of that car was posted and that steering setup was discussed. The most plausible theory was that they were probably using a production automotive p/s box that couldn't be reversed yet they still wanted a left side drag link.

That sound right to me. When I was a kid, the shop near my Dad's garage built "Super Modifieds" and the were finishing a chassis, they had the steering assembled, including the drag link, when they realized the steering turned the opposite way. They made a Bell Crank type linkage to solve the problem, but both of the arms were the same length. The length of arms on the Atkins set up looks like it would change the ratio as well.

I remember Colby in that car at Langhorne. It was warm ups and Al Miller spun the Stearly 42 in "turn 4" blocking the high groove. Colby came barreling around and was caught in one of those tween moments. He almost made it but hit the tail on Miller's car with the rt front. Broke the tie rod and proceeded into the pace car parked in the pits. Hit that brand new Chrysler and ended up under it.
