You are actually looking at a 1941 Plymouth. Impossible you say? This thing was built in ’56? You are right in arguing the constructed in ’56 part but wrong on the Plymouth part. Sure this thing was built in ’56 but it was built on a ’41 Plymouth chassis and running gear. Why? Because they were cheap and plentiful as all get out.

The body on the truck is interesting in that the nose cap is fiberglass while the rest of the body is steel. The bed and cab are a single piece, not two pieces like we typically see on most trucks. Various accent and trim pieces on the truck were taken from old Fords and other vehicles that could be readily found and stripped in junkyards, and the dashboard was typically a reworked 1950 Plymouth piece. Obviously this was a small volume operation and the Powell business plan of constructing “new” vehicles out of what were essentially 15 year old junkers didn’t have long term legs.

This particular truck is a “loaded” model because it has the two tone interior as well as the diamond plate tailgate and bed surround. One of the coolest parts of the truck is the tube-like storage area that could have been located on either side of the rear of the truck. Intended to be used to store fishing poles, it looks like this one was made into a tool box or something over the years.

I have hungered after a Powell for many years. Typical story, I walked past one in San Diego for years. Asked the old guy about it many times and showed major interest. Helped him with his lawn a couple of times even.
One day I SAW the dam thing going down the road on the hook.
He sold it for $25.00 because, "Nobody wants that old thing".
