Projects 54 IH R110 Build on a budget.

This truck was gifted to me by my Grandpa.
I've decided to go with a traditional restoration with a few customizations to make it my own. It's mostly solid as it was a NC truck so it rusted from the top down.

 

Looks pretty good.I really like it that you are doing an IHC,something different is cool. How do you plan to modify it?Are you going to keep the original engine?

 

You may want to look into oldihc.org. Plenty of info there for you.

 

Im planning on taking off the rear bumper since it was optional back when manufactured and fabricating a plate to hold tail lights. Also going to fab a wood deck for the bed. Straight pipe exhaust so you can really hear that signature diamond engine sound. I've already gotten the old SD 220 in line six runing good. Had to rebuild carb and fuel pump. Also took a few weeks to get the engine freed up properly

 

I'll take more pics to post later on what progress I've made.

 

Nice looking R that is going to be a neat project. That rear bumper and brackets is worth some bucks to a restorer. Most have no rear bumper or have a dealer installed aftermarket heavy duty bumper that is a factory installed rear bumper you have, will work for all L-R-S's

Whats the difference between the L, R, and S designations? Is it like a 1/2 ton, 3/4, and 1 ton?

 

Looks like a good start, Its nice to see the other brands making it these days. My dad had several of these, all 3/4 ton work trucks but I loved going with him in them when I was a kid. Fill er up with oil and check the gas please!

The L R and S series's were made in different time periods one after the other. Before the L series was the K series I believe. You'd have to google it for the dates. The numbers after the letter designated the type 1/2 ton, 1/2 ton HD, and so forth up to line haul tractors.

 

Subscribed! Nice truck and great to see an IHC. Like was said previously that back bumper is gold to IH guys.

 

I'd suggest to hold on to the rear bumper. I wish my 46 had one.

 

This is after all the work on the engine and rebuilding the parts that needed it. I love that sound. There's no other make that has this tone that I've heard before in an automotive engine anyways.

 

Sounds good! What all did you have to do to the engine?

 

With the idiots on the road these days its not wise to have no rear bumper.all my vehicles have both bumpers and I have been hit in the rear many times.

A late neighbor had a L it was a sleeper . he stuffed a 1955 Oldsmobile V8 in it . Looked stock on the outside .

 

It just took a lot of patience really to get it unstuck. Letting it sit with brake fluid in the cylinders for a few weeks and trying to turn it by hand. Making my own ignition wires. Rebuilding the carb and fuel pump. Hunting down the correct sock type oil filter. Running MMO through it and making sure all the valves were moving properly. Cleaning the intake/exhaust manifolds. Rebuilt the distributer. New plugs and coil. Lots of cleaning.

 

That being the case it will likely get better and better as you drive it.

 

The engine sounds good. It almost sounds like a little diesel.

I have a question about brake shoes. Where can I get them? Raybestos sells them but the reviews say that they do not fit in the drum. Any help would be great.

 

Yes! that a great sound. Glad your got it running so good.

 

Usually the diaphragm is dry rotted in the vacuum advance when they have sat that long. Does your distributor rotate when you rev it up? Also points from a Chevy 6 cylinder truck will work if you have the Delco distributor, much easier to come by than IH parts.

 

I bench tested the vacuum advance and it held vacuum. I need to re replace the vacuum line though cause I think I may have messed up the double flares.

 

Can you send your old shoes out to be relined? I don't know why Raybestos shoes wouldn't fit unless they were some other model and not like the originals.

There are antique car parts specialists who will take your old shoes and reline them. But it is easier and cheaper to just buy a set from the local NAPA or other parts store. If they don't fit you can always take them back.

Hey everyone. I know it's been a while. I was finally able to get new brake shoes for the old boy so I'll be posting some more updated pictures of what I'm doing as I repair the brake system. As the title states, this is a build on a budget. So bare with me. It may take some time. Also I'm working full time so it's hard to find time.
