The 150 driver may be ''getting up on it'' to jam 2nd gear! Can't do that with a 5 point harness, he may only have a lap belt. Those were the days!
I actually heard of this event for the first time yesterday when I heard it advertised on the radio. It appears to be a pretty big event and I thought it would be of interest to many on this board.
Two people who are members of the H.A.M.B have reported receiving spam bearing my name this morning. I've checked it out and the person sending e-mail over the name "[email protected]" is not your's truly. BEWARE!!! That's not me nor is it one of my e-mail accounts! c
We built this one in 1971 because it fell at 15.02 on a 15.00 O/SA class break. It ran about 2 tenths under the record at the end of 71...right before NHRA killed the car by forcing it into Super Stock . 283 /250 hp
Now that you mention it, I think it was my 4 dr Bel Air that fell at 16.02.That's how you did back then. It wouldn't be a bad combo with a T200 3 -speed, but hard to compete with a 283 /220 @ 217 with a 327/300 intake and small, phony carb. boosters. ;-)
Actually, I don't remember what happened to the body. We transferred the drive train to a 61 ht for SS/X , after NHRA ruined the 59 for Super Stock. I bought two 59 convertibles in my home town that were exactly the same color. One was a 283/ 185 and the other one was a 348/250. We built the whole thing in a week, using parts from both cars, and the drive train from the 61 Corvette. (283 /245) . Notice the misaligned door trim. One had power windows, I seem to remember, so we switched the whole door. Also the one good top was transferred to the other body. We did manage to put some new paint on the thing before The Little Guy Nationals in Nov. 71. It was a great car .The FI was so much smoother than the carbs at that time. We must have sold the roller locally in Hartford. I'll call Joe Santangelo and see if he remembers, but it's usually my job to recall such things. The 61 SS/X car was sold at the 71 Sanair divisional, to make room for some of the Bob Johnson cars. That's another good story about selling a car in Canada!
The delivery was for sale on racingjunk a couple of years ago. If I remmember right they wanted $1500 for it but it looked pretty rough.
Many Junior Stocks had one thing in common for many years and that is many of them were using Jere Stahl headers. I remember the day's when Jere used Dick Moroso car as a test car and he must have tired dozens of different header lengths and sizes of tube and then head to the drag strip to see if they worked or not. To me as a kid it always seemed like he was changing headers once a week for months trying to find the set they improved his E.T. Once some of the other header manufactures came along and started offering money and Free headers things started to change. Jimbo
My Fuelie Bel Air was quick but never competitive. It was heavy. It had power windows, power antenna, power steering and p. brakes and other comfort accessories. It was the ultimate street sleeper though with the engine call-out emblems removed.
I see your buddy is the one who had the delivery also. I've had people ask me if I have seen anything about it since I talked about buying it at one time but decided against it. Sleeper indeed. A moredoor fuely would have been a helluva weapon on the street! Was the F.I. available in the 4drs, or was that a transplant?
It looked like it had a lot of rust but you could still see some of the lettering. I hope who ever got it saves it and doesn't part it out. The rear lift gates can bring good money.
Did anyone make it out to the East Coast Hall of Fame gathering this past weekend in Henderson NC? If so please post pictures and/or videos. We had already made plans with family so I didn’t make it out but plan to make every effort to attend next year’s event.
