I use a Harbor freight portable garage in my garage with a big blue harbor freight tarp on the floor, at one end I put like 8 furnace filters the other end a Harbor Freight 24 in floor exhaust fan with a furnace filter in it, duct tape all the seams and it's as close to a spray booth as I can get. I usually paint the car in pieces as it can get a little tight in there. The results have been xcellent. when I'm done take down the garage, roll up the tarp and wha la my real garage is like new. I've always use Centari but now that it's not made anymore I'm going to try Eastwood's single stage enamel.

Two stage Duplicolor Premixed right off the auto parts shelf. Nice calm Fall Day and in the driveway.

I hope you don't think I'm being a jerk for asking but how much did it cost in paint? Or, how many cans did it take?

This is the Boatswagon boatcar I built for my daughter. One day she was watching Spongebob and said how cool it would be if we had a car that looked like a boat. I agreed and built her this. I painted this in my storage unit in the middle of the floor. It took almost a month of shooting a color or two a day and letting it dry so I could tape off the next section. You can get a really good paint job if you just wet the floors and be careful not to disturb the surrounding areas by blowing air around.

I posted at the beginning of this thread. As long sure a lot of have found out painting satin in stages just doesn't work to good. So over the weekend I pulled the 57 into the garage, a good scuff and mask and repaint. Now it all matches and looks good. My car was painted in an unheated 2 1/2 car garage in the middle of winter, January 3-4, 2010 to be exact. We got lucky, it was warm that day, 40 degrees. We had 2 diesel-powered bullet heaters running for 3 days straight to keep the temp up so the paint would flash off, we'd just keep adding to the tank when it'd get low. This is all HOK, we used a fast reducer to speed up the process a bit. It was in the 70s up at the top of the ceiling but would hover right around 60 degree lower around the car.

Whoever says you can't do quality paint work in a garage is full of it. Wet the floor down to control dust, have ample quality air supply, adequate lighting, follow the directions for the materials, and use some common sense and you'll have a pro paint job.

Can't paint at home anymore, somebody sent out the Fire Dept. Meth boys to see me. They tested my drain in my shop to see if I was dumping solvents down the drain. They were pretty nice and really were only concerned about the explosiveness of the solvents and the electric water heater in the garage.
Good point. We have a couple of shops who will rent their booths. One will even spray for you but will do no prep, wipedown, tack, etc. Just takes your paint and goes. By the hour is cost effective if you are piece painting a couple of fenders, hood, etc.
Lots of good info here, I would suggest putting construction " cheap" paper down on your garage floor. It can be wet down and also is not as static as trying to cover your floor with clear plastic .

  26. I painted mine in my garage... I learned the hard way on trapping wet paint. I did not allow the base to dry before I shot the clear coat. I cut and buffed the frame and I was really happy with it until..

It took about 2 weeks for this to happen.

So, I stripped the frame back to bare metal and did it all over again... lesson learned..
I was so pissed at this point, the wet floor, and plastic didn't happen...

Here's mine. 4 mil construction plastic from Home Depot. Two floor fans with oil burner filters, one in by the garage door, one out the window. Took about 5 minutes to suck out the over spray. Wet the floor prior to spray. Hobby Air forced air hood. Worked pretty good. The halogen lights really helped me see what was going on and heated up the space. I put them up close between coats to help it cure.

I like that setup, thanks for sharing. I'll be doing something similar when I come to spraying.
