Outstanding! Glad your under way with the Father Son project! Just took a little while to get sorted out!

 

been awhile, but we are hitting this hard now, hopefully till completion
using a 65-68? mustang tank. had to remove the 2 factory rivets and weld up the x member after to get the tank to lay flat on the rear most x member.




made a new x member to fasten the tank too. the tank will drop out from the bottom once the body is installed. the tank and frame portions will receive nut serts.


rear bag set up with tank installed.


for the rear shocks i build a upper x member and sleeved it with 1/2 " dom tubing to fasten the shocks too.

 

Great project. Maybe someday soon I'll start a similar story. Just yesterday my 25 year old son yanked my daily driver 1939 Ford into daylight after sitting since 1994. Before that it sat in my Illinois garage since 1980.
So we have similar stories just different Chevy powered cars.

 

Awesome project! Love to see these resurected. Looks like it's gonna be quite a ride.

 

been slow on updating this thread, well try to stay on top of it......
its wide open for now. trying to get it drive able for the kontienals up coming show , the bayou roundup in Lafayette in a few weeks. still lots to do, but i THINK we can make it......

still need to finish up the trunk sheet metal, tail pan, rear frame horns and bumper brackets, complete plumb, completely wire, powder coat chassis, assemble chassis, media blast the body, shave firewall, prime body, coat floors top and bottom, etc etc and then drive over 1,000 miles to the show.

recent progress to try and catch this up.
rockers, floors, trunk, and inner rocker where very rusty and in need of total repair. it was decided to custom fab it all instead of going back to the way gm intended. while we where at it, the body was channeled down approx 3". rocker now rest fully on mother earth.

its been a fun adventure so far, looking forward to seeing Rudy and his pops riding together in it.

 

the front x member was rusted through, the a arm mounts where pulling out the metal, so a new one had to be fabricate up.

 

been making some good progress on this build the last couple weeks.
got tit all mocked up, broke down, chassis sent to powder coater, body was blasted and primed. floors have been under coated with bed liner and seem sealed. final assembly has begun.

Are you sure this ain't a mock up with wheels and body, with no blocks under the body.
That is really low.

I've been following this since it first popped up. I really shouldn't say anything, 'cause it's already been said several times before, BUT: masterful work here. I feel so inadequate when seeing stuff like this.

I'm planning to replace the floors in Clarence this winter. I hope that they can come out even just a fraction as well as these have.

If you'll permit me I'd like to ask a couple of questions:

1. what gauge steel is the floor?
2. did you make provisions in the new under-floor framework to bolt the seats/seatbelts to or is the sheet metal floor strong enough to fasten to?

1-18 gauge floor, 1x2 and 1x1 14 gauge tubing for sub structure.

2- yes they have there own x members with tabs that are bent on the sides so you have triple shear strength on them , mostly used for suspension mounts or fuel cell tabs they are usually refereed too. ill try to get a pic for you in the next couple days.
