I've read everywhere about using a F1 gearbox on model a builds. My question is there a difference in the F2 and can it be used?
I have both. Was told by a old friend,in his 80's, who has owned ,collected, and worked on F-1's and F-2's, that the truck's have slower turning ratio, you will turn the steering wheel more to make the turn.
UPDATE: The steering box pictured to the right turns out to be F4 or larger. Please disregard. I think the F-2 box is bigger. Here's a side-by-side pic that was posted in the parts for sale section a few weeks ago; according to the seller, the F-1 box is on the left (painted) the box on the right is F-2 (rusty). I saved the image because--presuming the seller's data is correct--the supposed F-1 box I bought at the Monroe swap meet a few months ago turns out to be F-2. But at $25 for box, column and wheel, I really can't complain. Here's a link to the ad--there's more pix: http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/threads/1948-1952-ford-truck-steering-box.987095/
I see the physical difference. The only reason i'm asking is because I may buy a f2 for its motor. And it has all steering.
That box is not a F2! It's a F4 or larger. F1- F3 are the same. I,m the one bought that box. I wanted the larger for my modified. It takes a larger Pittman arm. Posted using the Full Custom H.A.M.B. App!
I made this mistake before and im still looking for a large pitman arm to go with a beauty box column and wheel.
Thanks HD Driver, that is good to know. After seeing the parts info posted by fordfitrucknut, I was wondering if there wasn't something wrong with the description in that ad. Sorry, all, for bringing misinformation to the thread.
I've seen a few f-3s in junkyards around here they were all big steering boxes... I have always believed f-1, f-2 were small boxes
Seems to me I had the same problem years ago and found a latermodel pitman from a gm steering box like a vega or bigger Saginaw unit that fit
If you have chance to buy a F4 or 5 box, that's in good condition, don't pass it up. Even though there larger, they still are very useable, especially in a four cyl. application! But I would pass on one without the pitman arm. There very hard to find. The pitman can be modified by cutting of the ball and drilled and tapered ( 7 degrees) for a early style Ford rod end. More than enough material there. You can also fit a standard ford F1 steering wheel . Hope this helps out.
Is the earlier jail bar steering the same setup as F1 to F4? Still trying to find info. Also the crossmember
