  4. The man had a good eye,he preserved many images of structures that no longer exist..

BTW,this type of photo shows that old cars were not prized as the are today, they were just old junk. HRP

Seriously: what kind of person would throw away a set of images like this. Certainly it wasn't Cushman's idea to get rid them?

I never saw that he bought a Cadillac (as mentioned in blog)? That 58 Ford was a big step down from the Lincoln.

There are images that show us the past, in color they're even better. Thanks Me. Cushman for stopping time in those images and Thank You Ryan for posting them here for us to see,

I've squandered many hours looking at that sight. Cushman's photographs definitely give you a great look into the past. The cars in them are the icing on the cake!

  22. Wow ... Good eye!

Until I zoomed in on the image, I thought it was just some weird reflections/shadows on the fender:

Boxes say "factory seconds". Wonder if they came out the back door of Warshawsky's over on Archer?

Cool. Unfortunately, I'll hazard a guess that a lot of work like this gets thrown out by under-appreciating relatives. What a loss this would have been. Nice save, all around. Gary

Hey all, so glad to see how much everyone here enjoyed the Charles Cushman Collection. I am a software developer at the Indiana University Digital Library that helped develop this collection a number of years ago in coordination with the University Archives. We spent a lot of time providing rich faceted search and browse capabilities into this collection because of the treasure trove of that it is. It was important for us to to allow people to search and browse for just about anything that specifically interested them, such as 'Automobiles and United States' (pretty sure I had something to do with that one specifically ;)) For some real fun, remove that constraint on country and look at all the cool cars from that era around the world. I've worked on lots of rare materials collections since then but helping bring Cushman to light was definitely my finest hour. It had such a big impact on me that I've even based some of my own artwork on images in this collection:

3BumsBatteryParkNY1940.jpg Wow, I got sucked in, what a treasure trove! Some of my favorites already posted.
Caption says something like "Three bums at Battery Park" (they were bums and hobos back in the day. "Homeless" didn't enter the lexicon until 70s or so)

Great stuff, thanks to all involved for bringing this to us.
