I drove my 40 2 door sedan to the liquor store last week to pick up some beer and scotch. When I got ready to go the starter spring let go. No startie! I called a friend and he came down and we pulled it and got it going. Anyway while sitting there on the running board (try that on a new car!) so many people came by to offer a hand or talk it was really kind of fun. Lynn Moore, a local long time hot rodder, offered to buy the car, LOL! Anyway here's a pic I took while waiting. And no, I haven't fixed it yet, I have a bed room and bathroom remodel underway that is on my top priority, at least according to Head Quarters (aka: wife). Anyway I just love this old car and hope to get it going for the Primary's car club show the Rumble. Hope to see lots of you guys there.

Surprising! Lynn only has 32's! I might have an extra spring if you need it

Thanks Walter but I think I'm just going to order one along with some other odds and ends. I certainly appreciate the offer. Hope to see you around. If you see this car I must be close by!

PS: I know that about Lynn, eh? But I think he's had a few 40's over the years too. I like talking to Lynn, he's been there and done that. And he's always smiling and happy, at least when I've had the pleasure of talking to him.

Nice looking car. When I saw the thread title I immediately thought of Toad in AG trying to score at the liquor store. You didn't have to ask anyone to buy for you after you left your ID at home.

  11. I can't believe she let you take enough time off to go to the liquor store.

  14. LOL I only own one vehicle that I use for daily running. If I breaks I fix it, how long can it take to throw a starter in it? Or change the bendix? Is that what you are calling a starter spring?

I had a POS '48 Chevy in High School and I drove it to work and school for over a month when the starter failed. There were always a few kids in the parking lot to help push and I lived at the top of a hill at home. Another reason to have a standard trans.
Love your '40, it looks like my friends did in '59.

Man, not another car in the lot. Around here someone would be honking at you to give up the parking spot.

Yeah, the starter drive, bendix. The spring is part of that assy. Not long to fix but I have other irons in the fire right now. She'll be running soon enough.

  19. My little brother and I pushed a car we owned all winter once because the bendix took a dump. Finally we had to make a road trip and he decided that we should fix it before we left. So off to the O'reily's and bought a 3 dollar part ( at the time) and it took us all of half an hour to fix it.

Just after high school my best friend had a 66 Mustang (6 cyl.) that I must have changed the Bendix
1/2 dozen times. Finally made him spring for a rebuilt starter which seemed to cure the problem. Sadly
he traded the car for a Pinto.

Hold on here...you have a '40 Ford...you have a flathead...see the little hole in the grill??
How come you don't have the original hand crank?? Get one, and stamp AAA on it!
You want to see astounded and impressed bystanders, whip out your Armstrong starter and light the thing up!!
This "Help" you mention is for people with overhead valves! :)

    I smell a song here:

Wife sent me out for Beer
    Na Nah Na Nuh
    Took my Hot Rod '40
    Na Nah Na Nuh
Hopped in to head back home
    Na Nah Na Nuh
Starter died in the parking lot
    Na Nah Na Nuh

I feelin' down, I got 'dem Liquor Store Blues

Friend came, we got it going
    Na Nah Na Nuh
But by the time I made it home
    Na Nah Na Nuh
    Saw my wife heading off
    Na Nah Na Nuh
On board of a Budwieser truck
    Na Nah Na Nuh

I feelin' down, I got 'dem Liquor Store Blues

Took a little poetic license on the second verse..
