Getting the Zipper ready for Georgetown. Adjusted the valves and ditched the A-Ford-Able oil filter valve cover. Replacement valve cover came and it was for the early engines. Waiting for the correct one. One and four exhaust valves were not opening all the way. Set number four at .015" and number one at .013" to compensate for water flow.

As you can see in the upper left of the photo, the oil return tube is too long. My engine was built in May of 1931 and is considered a later model according to Steve at Bert's Model A. IMG_0851.JPG

denis4x4 I didn't realize there was a difference. Good information to know. Hope you get the part so you can make Georgetown.

  11. There must be a shorter tube avaliable. Bring it over and I can shorten the tube if you run out of time before Georgetown.

Denis there are 2 different set up for oil return 28/29 has the oil return outlet higher and forward and uses the shorter return pipe
and 30/31 has the outlet lower and rearward and longer return pipe
the 30/31 engine also had revised oil dams in the valve chamber
I prefer to use the 28/28 valve cover and return pipe as it holds just that little bit more oil in the valve chamber for oil supply to main bearings
I have also just blocked off the 2 outlets without any problems

Just got an email from Steve at Bert's and the correct valve cover is on its way

  15. Are there official rules for what can run at TROG? I know you have to be invited, but was looking for guidelines. Didn't see any on their web site.

I haven't used the Snyders bearings. However I think that if you are going to convert to shell bearings you need to consider that you will also need to buy thrust bearings, pay for machining for both, and in my opinion you need to convert to full pressure oil system and filter system... which involved drilling the crank and making oil tubes etc...
Poured babbitt bearings are soft and will absorb hard pieces of metal or carbon , but the shell bearings have much less bearing material backed with a steel shell which stops the debris from embedding below the bearing surface , the bigger pieces will hurt the crank .
I think it is much more economical to repair a Model A motor with a high quality Babbitt... and remember to change the oil regularly, and drive within rev limits etc... unless you are building an all out race motor.

  26. all of the things you said here is on the list of things to do, this will be a touring motor for now that wil get a overheadvalve head later on, so its a race motor in street mode. so i need to know if the snyders bearings are any good or if i have to find somthing else :)

  29. I bought a set to put in my latest B engine. Unfortunately I haven't ben able to use them - it seems the block was originally line bored slightly askew and there's not enough material to machine out to match the shell back. The machining size for the one piece bearings is slightly less than the slant 4 Vauxhall big end shells. However I can't use those either despite having a set of those as well, so it's back to white metal on this block.
