Vintage shots from days gone by!

Interesting that this one has turned up. I found it on a site which tells the life story of some important people and the photo was supposedly taken in 1917. As the car is an early Whippet it could not have been taken any earlier than late 1927 but on informing the person who owned the site of this I was told in no uncertain terms that I did not know what I was talking about.

 

Pontiac only did the 2x4 set up option for one season, which was 1962 I think.

 

Post #101811 includes a colourised pic of a busy city street scene that looks to have been taken in about 1930. I notice there are several right hand drive cars visible. Anyone have any idea where it was taken? Maybe the yellow plates are a clue?

 

You ARE correct and you DO know what you are talking about.

 

Good spotting. The only RH drive I can see are the 2 on the right. At first I thought it could be a reverse negative but you can read the signs so it isn't that.It is late 20's(28 Model A on left)or even early 30's . There were a lot of RH drive cars up to 1910 or so and then it changed to LH when Henry Ford made the decision to make all T's LH drive after 1908. The cars are all driving on the correct side of the road(for you guys anyway).
Maybe a special event with imported cars or just some old RH drive.

The above reply explains the presence of the RHD cars. Most of it is digitally produced but some of it was shot in Wellington, New Zealand and then 'worked on' by Weta Workshops to replicate 1933 Manhattan. Many of the cars used belonged to local enthusiasts and someone from that area will know which ones are real and which are not.

 

I don't think that is correct. A friend of mine, Pete Schilaci, bought a 1965 Pontiac Bonneville new from the factory. He ordered it with the 421" engine, dual quads, McCulloch cam, factory cast iron swoopy headers and a 4-speed tranny. It also had the 8-lug factory wheels. I sure wish I could find that car now. I'll bet there weren't too many around.

The only regular production dual quad engine from Pontiac was in 1956. They did offer a dual quad manifold for the Super Duty engines in 1961 (very few, sold over the counter only) and 1962-1963.

It may have been possible that a performance oriented dealer would have sold a new Bonneville in 1965 with an dual quad aftermarket manifold, but not a factory part - the 1962-1963 SD manifolds wouldn't fit on a 1965 or newer engine.

 

That would be a McKellar cam. McCullochs were superchargers.

Clint's first car was a Model T-based flathead-powered lakes modified that his father bought for him for $25. Darren said he doesn’t know much more about the modified than what we see in the photo, but we do know that Eastwood took shop classes at Oakland Technical High School and often rebuilt engines (and all he had on his mind then were “fast cars and easy women”).
