Hot Rods Show us your salt flats car

I've never been to Bonneville and being from Minnesota the only time I get to see white stuff on the ground is during our long winters. But I always love reading about Bonneville cars in Hot Rod Magazine in the months after speed week. This could get OT quickly but show us what you've got or are still working on.

How 'bout some more detail pics of the body, esp the rear beltline over the wheel-arch & the patches near the B-pillar/turret area. Any how-to's, or build thread? I'm amazed at your work, + the speed of it! Also just stupid to consider doing something like that to a '35 sedan that I have, that is in horrible shape. Or so I'd like to dream... . Wife would be happy w/a coupe... . Someday before I die...

This is the car/team that I have worked on the last eleven years.
I did the original body work, paint, aero design, and I was the crew chief. It has evolved into a longer version with a larger wing. It is now powered by a twin turbocharged big block Chevrolet.


I also designed and built the aero package on this car. I know it looks strange but the rules of land racing make for some odd shapes. This car is powered by a 1940's flathead Cadillac that is blown and injected.

I really like the red car. Odd is OK if it makes it slip stream and they don't kick you off the salt.

Very cool. One day a while ago I found some weird speed website. Had a thread on it where someone broke the speed record for a banger and was running fuel injection and other cool stuff.

Only semi related; but I hope we see some cool stuff on this thread!

 

I wouldnt consider this salt but I based my modified on something that would have been built in the late 40s early 50s for California dry lakes racing.

 

The rear quarters are made from a pair of 34 fenders. To do the body line on the side I made a makeshift powerhammer from an old punch press and carved the body line die out of aluminum.

Great idea, especially since Speed Week has been cancelled this year. At least we'll get to see some of the stuff that might have been there....

 

Current G/BFR record holder at 210.881mph. Driven from Pomona to Bonneville and ran 207 on the first pass. Also holds the G/BGR record. Transformed into a drag car this year. Running a 14:1 Hilborn injected chevy on alcohol.

Thanks for the pics. When you get some more, I never get tires of seeing 'trick' ways of doing the almost-impossible... . The 35 I mentioned is non-ford/chevy/mopar, (Stude)& their rear qtrs were different. I know of a grand total of... 1, & I doubt it'd be available for contour mimicking. While I know it doesn't need to be perfect or correct, I'd want it to look like an orig set of 'lines".

I clicked "like" on Jim Sibley's post only because there is nowhere to click "stunned". An amazing rescue of what to me would be a terrifying project. Mine is a wheel short of a roadster but its fast enough to have a few records there.

 

I really love salt styled cars. Thought I would revive this thread. Maybe it will get me to work on my salty car.

It's no further along. I need to finish my 41 willys. All I think about is building the salt flats car, but I must finish what I have started.

Well if you build a car specifically to go to Bonneville I damned well hope it is one you built with the SCTA rule book close by and it passes tech and gets to run. I can't get too excite about street cars built specifically to pose at Bonneville and at the Hotel Parking lot.

 

Here`s mine, I built it just as a styling exercise, something to do at work when I wasn`t busy. It was built to the time period of the late 50`s. `37 V8 60, `48 Ford front and rear axles, no roll bar. I did make it with a radiator and 3 speed transmission so I could drive it. It probably won`t ever make to Bonneville, I live in N.C. but it still turns heads when I drive it on the street.

 

Put my son and I in the 200 mph club. First GMC fuel roadster over 200.

Yes I built the Flatcad car I have been involved with every aspect of it at one time or another I was not the engine builder and I didn't chop the top there were many people involved in this project and thanks to all of them for giving me the opportunity to set a land speed record in a car I put together don (pops29) dale (bored&stroked) buddy (38flattie) and all the others involved thank you. hopefully if all goes well we can get the car back to the salt in the future
