  6. These young racers posing behind the wheels of their Soap Box Derby cars are from Boy Scout Troop 35 at Second Presbyterian Church in Kannapolis. Undated photo from the 1950s at the Kannapolis History Association. Some of the car sponsors were Kannapolis-Landis Airport, F.L. Smith Drug, Mobile Gas, Mulinax Insurance, Melton & Moore Grocery and Firestone.

  11. I grew up in Downey and your four part series brought back some fond memories. It was great to see some things I vaguely remember in the late 60's and 70's that hadn't changed from what you posted much until maybe in the later 70's but had clouded over by more recent memories. I moved from there in 1998 and it's changed even more since then.
I went to Downey HS but a bit later than those you posted and I've probably looked through some of those same year books since one of my teachers was involved with editing the year books.

    Hi Seb

I think that Jacks first all steel white Comet was the best one, it had the engine farther forward and ran hi-gear only and blazed the tires like a fueler

Plus he ran the exhaust pipes straight back under the rear end, and boy did they sound great with a big load of nitro

Like seeing a more modern ' 554 Fuel coupe ' as those two were my all time favorite match racers

Days of the early Ford cammers and just before the floppers. Set-back was a little much.
