Be sure to visit Bear Holmberg while you are in Gizzy. Bears Signs in the phonebook, and near Nelson Park from memory.

  4. Just had a mate from Gisborne visit here today. Pretty sure he headed back there tonight. He has a '49 Lincoln Coupe project. Still in the states awaiting a chop before shipping here.

  5. Damn it Colly, why'd you go post pics of that cold white stuff for? :D:cool:
Now I Gotter go crank up the fire some. ;)

Sounds like a great car adventure Wade and his boy are on, and if the weathers as stunning as it was here today, I can't wait to see the pics, hopefully without that white stuff.

Back home again last night at 1am. We loaded the car on the trailer in Gisborne and drove out of town. Would have loved to catch up with Bear, but with 8 hours of driving ahead I just wanted to get back on the road. The hills we had to get over were going to get covered in ice again, so I needed to get through them before things got too cold. Towing with a Front wheel drive Honda was bad enough, without dealing with ice as well. We stopped at the top of one of the hills so my son and his girlfriend could play in the snow, neither of them had ever been in the snow.
Today we unload and clean everything, but until after i have sorted out the animals, Lambing! Lost one ewe lamb and probably one ewe mum. Oh fun!

  12. Sweet! You're in Europe now? I've got a buddy from here (San Diego) that's just retired and he and his wife are over there also. Their in London, last I heard, but they've been all over. Doing a lot of cruising to get around. Rome was nice (took us a couple of days to find the Trevi Fountian, and we were walking right past it!)! We spent 3 days there, and two days in Florence, and at the time I wished we had done it the other way around. Have fun and safe travels!

  13. Cool to see to young fella bend over doing the work too as that is exactly how I got taught by my step father. You need to this, this and this and that in that order to accomplish that. Oh and my step father was a wanker in the fact that he would tell me what to do once and then expect me to remember everything and do it without me asking again. Oh, what memories I have but I'm sure you and your son will enjoy working together on the Escort and build better memories. The Car will look super cool when you both have finished.

Yesterday we had a dig through all my Escort parts pins and found a bunch of parts we can utilize. A 3.5:1 diff complete with sway bar and big drums, Big discs and calipers for the front, Hubs for the front and a heap of another small bits and pieces.
We also gathered together a set of 4 Cortina rims that are a little wider than the stock Escort ones, so I took the tires off ready to blast and paint.
We dragged out the Pinto 2L engine bolted to an escort trans to drop it into the hole to see how it all fits in there. The sump doesn't fit around the cross member, so we dropped it off along with the oil pump and pick up. The sump will need a few mods to fit later. Using the stock Escort mounts onto the Pinto engine works perfectly.

We will get back to regular programming shortly!

I know this might be of no interest to you, but if it is, here goes:

The front end of a Mark 2 escort, is a good place to put Capri 300 front legs (McPherson), ford Granada discs and Volvo calipers.
That gives you the stopping power of the rally cars from back in the day, the look of fairly stock and it improves handling.

If you can make it handle up to its best, it should be a walk in the park to drive that sucker on any back road and/or rush hour traffic, regardless of your son drives it or your wife.
Good clean family entertainment you can trust!
Safety doesn't have to a pose fun or fast!

Hey thanks for that! I had heard of the combo but wasn't sure which bits to use. Do you know which volvo calipers they used?

They ran Girling 4 Pistons ,they fit from late 122 (121/amazon) 140 and early 240 pre 79. 164 and 264 will also fit.

I am trying to get thing back on track. Spent the day working on the English wheel I started to put together a couple of years back. Today was focusing on welding on the rise and fall adjuster mechanism. I stalled on the project when i got to the stage of needing some argon for tig welding. But since getting the gas for the header welding recently I have no excuse now. I am off to the speed show to wave the flag for NZHRA at 0500 tomorrow morning so there won't be anything going on for the weekend on the job here. Monday the kids are all back to school and I don't go back to paid employment till Saturday next week. Looking forward to some uninterrupted days in the shop next week to get this machine finished. I will be needing it soon when I start on the body of the coupe. 2013-03-06 17.06.31.jpg The frame made from some scrap steel tube , some left-over bends and flat plate for the spine in the centre.
2013-02-04 15.39.52.jpg My quick release set-up for the bottom wheel. So you can take the job out with out adjusting the tension. Also makes it a bit easier to get a flanged or swaged piece out of the machine.

This is what I welded today onto the bottom of the lower wheel adjuster, where the thrust bearing sits.
2013-03-30 17.01.34.jpg The top wheel mount under construction when I was last working on it. The plate will bolt onto the frame with the ability to swap out the wheel for various other uses, like Planishing hammer, Louver press etc etc.
2013-03-13 14.09.43.jpg The plates all drilled together so the holes all line up nicely.

Today was a good day, with a heap of machining done on the rise and fall mechanism for the English wheel. Tomorrow I am working on the top wheel mount, machining some spacers to get the wheel centered and straight. Pictures to follow.

I had a weekend away at the CRC speedshow in Auckland, doing my bit for the association, shaking hands and kissing babies. Meeting plenty of people and hearing lots of stories. I also got the chance to meet Jessi Combs from All Girls garage and Overhauling fame.

Locating the bottom wheel and adjuster mechanism.

Only tacked in position. There is no verticle load on the reduction box. The thrust washer inside the box section carries all of that.

I am pretty happy with the way it has all turned out......so far!

I still have the release/clamp to do on the pivot mechanism.....today I hope.
