Ive had two 409's and several 348's. My 380 HP 409 would kick the snot out of my 348 (same car). I street raced it a bunch and most folks couldn't tell a 380 HP 409 from a 250 HP 348. Interestingly the 409 HP car didn't run any faster than the 380 HP and it didn't do nearly as well on the street. Both cars with similar gearing were 13.80 cars @ 108 or so in street trim (circa 1965)
This is a good thread with GRERAT cars and engine pics.....am really glad others are excited about 409's also !!! Heres a pic of mine.
Man that's my dream car. Had a 62 Hardtop 283 car in the early 70's that I swapped in a 63 425hp 09. Always liked the bubble tops better but never had the cash at the right time.
I had a very similar car. It was a Belair 2dr hardtop originally a 283 P-glide. I first put in a 300 HP 327 (trade with a car lot) and then a 425 HP W from a wrecking yard. It was tan and white. Drove it to UT for three years. Great fun...
Heya! ...just wondering if anybody knows anything about what's involved in one of these? No points, and no instructions... Are these worth-while??
I know it's ot, but this is one of the new aluminum 409s from Waldens. Huge cubes, EFI and awesome looks heading for a flip front 55 Chevy a buddy is building. Thought you guys may like to see it. Posted using the Full Custom H.A.M.B. App!
The one thing I have found is 409's are expensive and scarce. I just bought a 62 Biscayne , 283 4 spd, and would love to find a 409 for it. Had lots of Chevy engines over the years, but never a 348/409. Guess maybe it's time I do.
