Very cool... like early SCORE racing! I dig the shortened wheelbase, wheelie pulling "kid's entertainment"...

 

Geeez that's some crazy shit! Like a mix of Moto-cross and dirt track racing. At least they had some roll "hoops". I wonder if all the women from Busti, NY are nice and............oh well, it was just a thought.

someone posted, about a year or two ago a hot rod he found in new york that had a roll bar that looked like that. i wonder if it is one of those?

Heck the guy in the 33-34 Phaeton (A PHAETON) isn't even wearing goggles, much less a helmet or roll bar.

It was mentioned above about MX racing. That's exactly what I got out of it as well. Took me back to the days when we'd drag our sorry selves back home all muddy with ache's/pains and go right back out and do it again.

Aside from that, that race looked AWESOME. I think I spied at least one Coupester, but what looked even more notable to me as far as how some of the guys built, was the Phaetons, I think at least one was a Tudor with the roof cut off.

 

So, it does seem that wheelie cars were nothing new. I think anyone anywhere with a couple bangers and some open space was doing this back in the day

What I found interesting, is that early, fenderless Fords were already the dominant hot rod by 1939.

 

If that was 1939, then those 9-N Ford tractors in the background would have been brand new!
