It is my understanding that the first one pictures is a 40 Ford coupe modified into a convertible. The next one pictured looks like a (fiberglass) Wescott 39 Ford convertible . I believe Dee Wescott called this model the 39 Super Deluxe. The real 39 Ford convertibles came with a rumble seat and a short top. 40 Ford convertibles came with a back seat thus the longer top.

I like both the 39 and 40 convertibles but prefer the 39 with the shorter top. I am fortunate to have one of Dee Wescotts' Super Deluxe versions (for 14 years) and it still trips my trigger every time I look at it.

Great bunch of pictures shown today BTW!

See post #253. All stock Ford '39 convertibles had a short top and a rumble seat; all '40s have a longer cockpit and top, and a conventional trunk. The two cars shown are both "phantoms" using '40 details on a '39-style body.

Assuming you're referring to the black convert in post #250, no. It's a '39 convertible with a '40 front clip and dash, and '40 trim details throughout. The '40 coupe-to-convert is mine, and is the car in my avatar.

39 guy, I agree with you that the Wescott "Super Deluxe" convertibles are great; can you post pictures of yours?

  4. For the benefit of those who didn't see the flatty in that coupe, here it is.

That coupe got me really desiring hopping up the flatty in the '40 stake truck, but instead of doing that, I started messing with the one that I had set aside in my garage. I'd never paid much attention to it, since I pulled it out of my coupe around 1980.

After pulling one of the heads, to free up a stuck valve, I found it to be a 3 3/8" bore, 4" stroke, and that the block has been relieved. The block casting is a 59V. I'm in the process of cleaning it up, will give it a fresh coat of paint, de-grease the heads, have Skip rebuild the pumps, and I'm planning on dropping this one into my stake truck this winter. Won't be quite as pretty as the one in his coupe, but going from a stock 221 to a 286 should be fun!

Thanks, I too hope mine is finished soon. In the same vein, I look forward to seeing your convert in traditional form!

Moriarity, driving for coffee is the high point of my day, much better than organized events at my age. My organizational tolerance lowers with each birthday and my fuse setting does too, making me not a "fun person" at those events where they want to line you up by some rules.

  13. Slow down there, HOT ROD! ;-)

I ran some leftover garage sale stuff to the DAV store, in the '40 stake truck, and the lady asked if it was my "daily driver". I said "not really", but the fact of the matter is that I have only driven my late model once in the past 3 weeks!

  20. I'm in that curmudgeon club. At my current age, at nearly 49, I ought to be a really cranky ol' curmudgeon if I make it to 70.

It seemed to me that my graduation from Old Fart to full-on Curmudgeon happened right around 70.

Got my Olds flippers at the Portland Swap Meet a few weeks ago. Guy had seven of 'em, says $200 for a set of four. I walked away, stopped and thought "that ain't a bad price". I went back and saw a friend standing at the same booth. I say " I'm lookin' at those flippers for $200". He says " These guys are friends. Let me see what I can do". Friend tells him $150. I couldn't get the money out fast enough. The hard part was picking out the 4 best because they were all near perfect. I wished I had bought 'em all.

I've been looking for a nice $50 Fiesta wall hanger for years. I wish you'd bought 'em all too!

Hell I have kids older than you are boy. ;)I don't even own a 40 Ford. I ended up with a 39. They don't even look the same.
I have no idea what a curmudgeon is but I'm over 70 and never get cranky! So just git off my lawn and hold the noise down! o_O

I posted this also to the Post, 1940 Ford 75th Anniversary, but thought it would be good here too. Here are two pictures of one long picture taken on the 50th Anniv. Tour in July of 1990. My '40 was there under old ownership, and Marv and Carol provided me with this copy of the photo, "a big thanks" to them. Taken at Donner Ski Resort on the Tour. Anyone else in this picture?
