Hot Rods external trunk hinges.that are FLAT

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by model A hooligan, Apr 18, 2015.

  1. So I've searched all the the ads and ive even spent some money on some hinges but nothing seams to work.I want external hinges on my 29 coupe. I purchased 50 ford hinges and they are a compound curve that just looks waaaaaaaaay off.I also got tr3 hinges, when I tried remove the studs to grind them flat, they snapped off and I just don't feel like dealing with that.what is amhinge that doesn't have a compound curve in it? Of course boat hinges but they have exposed hardware and I don't want that

  2. For the crowd that say use stock model a hinge, well the whole drip rail area is gone in my car,and I did make my own a style hinge.no matter what I do it distorts the bod when I tighten them.even with bracing it pulls the belt seam away from the sheet metal.not looking to deal with that so I'd like external hinges

I don't know of any off hand with a flat mounting surface, but what about making your own external hinge?

  4. I want something to looks clean and like mentioned no exposed hardware.I doubt I can do that.I'm sir ei wouldn't be happy with it.I thought about it briefly tho.

A lot of mid 50s English cars had exposed hinges.. Hillman Imp front hood, and Hillman Minx rear trunk lid hinges, come to mind..

^^^^^^^^^^^^. Sorry, but the '41 Chevy, and other GM models that use same body shell, hinges are not flat either......just 'closer' to flat than some. The deck lid/body has enough curvature to require left and right hinges.

  13. Mg has more curve than tr3 did you pull the studies and grind them flat? That's how I ruined my tr3 hinges cause I thought it would work

When we used '50 shoebox hinges on my buddy Jerry's Model A Sport Coupe , we took some aluminum strip , cut it to shape to fit under the hinges and ground them into a wedge to make the hinge pins level with each other . Not too difficult , just a small bit of time involved . I don't remember if they got painted with the car , but I don't think so . They end up thin , so they're hardly noticable .

Morris Minor trunk hinges are nice-looking and small , but have some lean to them as well.

No exposed hardware limits you. Consider boat hardware that's stainless, get it all bolted up and adjusted, tig the hardware to the outside surface so you have studs, not bolts.. Finish grind and buff, or brushed finish, or paint.

Well, funny you should ask. I have external hinges on my roadster. They are 41-48 Chevy. Just bolted them on. Well actually I did braced then from the inside as well. It was a pretty easy install.

I sure wish I had seen those before Anderson.
I used the hump back hinges on my coupe but I had to grind angled shims to make them work.
I also epoxied all thread in to use as studs.

It took quite a while to make them.
I torch cut 1/2 steel in the rough and finished with a angle grinder and a belt sander for the angle.
They angle from 3/8 to 3/16 approximately.
It was trial and error. Grind... Cool.... Check & repeat.

I wouldn't want to do it again but they came out great.
It wasn't my idea though I saw them on another car.
    Possibly Mr Ford's coupe ???

I don't believe the Mini trunk hinges are flat either . The rear body of the Mini is rounded . I can look closer at it tomorrow - I have a Mini resto going on at my shop right now .

  24. Triumph Herald and Early Triumph Spitfire hinges.

  25. 41-48?? When I search all I find is 37-40 and they are a little pricey
