I've got a 40 front axle and spring to go under the car and it is 2" narrower King pin to King pin then the 35. Is the 40 front axle going to give me any problems? I've also got the spindles and brakes off a early 40's car that I hope will fit, it is the same size King pin I believe. I'm all ears if you have done this before and have any good advice.

 

Any early Ford spindle from 39-48 is what you want. Order a new set of kingpins for those spindles and have them bushed and reamed to fit the KP's. As far as that axle goes I'd probably look for a 35-36 if you are planning on dropping it a full 4". The 37-40 you can only drop a bit because there isn;t enough meat between the kingpin and the perch bolt hole. PM @thunderbirdesq and see if he has a 35-36 axle to have dropped or already dropped. He might take your 40 in on as the core charge.

It should be noted that if you are splitting the wishbone (no need to if you are putting an early ford trans behind a SBC) but if for some reason you are any axle from 32-36 would work easy.

The '40 spring should be good. Reverse those eyes and mate it to the right axle and perch bolts and you'll be sitting pretty.

 

Thanks, Jeffrey. I've got the 35 axle that was in the car, I just don't have a good set of wish bones for them, the spring mounts were cut of the ones in the car. The 40 axle I do have a good wish bone for thats way I was thinking of going with it.

Next question, will the 40 spring work with the 35 axle?

 

One door on, but I do need a good lower hinge. Pulled the 283 over to see how the 35 liked it, they seem to get along fine.

 

running a 38 Ford axle in mine with unsplit bones. Tire clearance is good with 15 by 5 inch fronts,

I just heard a rumor today there might be a pile of sheet metal parts in the shop, hood, fenders, etc. Quitting time is only two hours away, but its going to last for ever. I'm ready to see whats there.

 

It was a thaw after our crazy winter, I needed to get it charged and running, Here was my garage during the November storm...up to the top of the door

 

Looks too darn cold for me! Looking forward to seeing this car progress

I'm debating on if I should fill the roof or not. Any one have any history on when filling the roof got started? I've heard about all kinds of donor vehicles for a roof clip. I'd like to hear from people who have done this and what worked well.

 

why fill the roof?
the rubber holddown strip on a 35/6 works really well and is not that tough to install, there was a how to install article in rod and custom magazine back in the early 70's that i'm sure you could find

I believe a 52 Caddy roof was used on my chopped 36 3W. I'm also debating if I should fill the roof of my stock height 36 3W so I would like to see what people say about history on it.

 

I'm not sure if I'm going to fill it or not, I like the roof both ways and trying to decide.

I'd really like to find out when that practice got started of filling the roof.

 

'37 model year was the first year for the solid roof. Guys started filling them
with ribbed station wagon roofs in the mid-60's, if I recall correctly. '57-59 Fords
were the most popular to begin with, followed by early '60's Chev wagons, used
into the '70's. Others have been used in more recent years, if the crown is very
close to the early Ford.
