Projects Recreating the jesse lopez coupe

Unfortunately the original X member is long gone. Then I realized that I probably better get another one and do the cut/flatten deal. After seeing how heavy and bulky it was I then called Jesse and desided that I would do it Jesse's way. I can use this to get the correct size hole for the spring pack.

Like the lowered seat, I'm dealing with fractions of inches. I don't think I have the luxury of this much room for the suspension snubber.

I'm guessing you are going to have to notch the frame?

On my 33 ford pick up, I used some auto body panel epoxy, to glue a thin, dense, pad of rubber to the frame. Many years later, I'm still very happy I did that, no issues to report there. Maybe it could be benefit you too?

 

Looking and learning. Will be soon on my agenda to sort out the rear end on my 39.

 

With all the time spent under the car looking things over, the C notch definitely looks to be the thing to do. I catch myself when I think thoughts like this because Jesse says that the frame wasn't cut.

As much as I'd like to notch this frame, I would like to keep things authentic more. Driving around (almost) on the bump stops must have been part of the Jesse Lopez coupe experience.

This is where I need to be.

 

I vote no notch.

I can't believe Mr. Lopez hasn't c-notched the car back in the day.A car this low definitely needs to be c-notched if want to drive/enjoy it.That's no news.Now or 60+ years ago.Here's a pic of the Sam Barris Mercury at Brizios during resto.You get the idea...

If Mr Lopez says it wasn't notched then it wasn't. Something like that is a little harder to forget then say some little detail.
Notching it would be like putting bags on Juniors Ford. May make it better but then you start to open up that door to all kinds of changes.....
This could be part of the reason that Mr Lopez ran a dual shock system it the back. Make it stiffer to avoid riding on the axle.

This thing continues to expand on me. I now realize that I can't just do the rear X member without setting up the dual shocks as well. It's easier and faster to just fab up the brackets myself instead of trying to find something that will work and then wait for them to arrive.. Pics to follow.

 

Here's the brackets for the L side coil over shocks. With all the big holes in the inner frame rails, I think the thing to do is "fish plate" the area.

 

The brackets are going to need some refinement as the final fit approach's.

Thanks Dave, everything is positioned correctly and tacked together. Then removed and welded up solid out from under the car.

 

As much as I hate to admit it, my car rests on the bump stops. The ride is actually pretty good but it will get notched this summer.

 

I will admit mine is pretty close as well....less than an inch. And like you, the ride isn't the worst, but a small notch is somewhere in the future. Looking good Jerry!

 

Here we are all welded up and corrosion protected.

 

OK, almost there. I would like to install the gas tank and get this thing buttoned up, but I gotta do those inboard shocks first.

 

Just about done (what a struggle). Chris (the trimmer) told me to come and see him this week to see if that '57 Chev. was done. I'll see him tomorrow.
