Coming from a member who it appears never did an intro?

In the short time I have been here it has changed abit, for the better in my opinion. As with anything, peoples interests change or they move on to something else. For all of the members that have stopped posting, or post much less often, new members join, and some of them have lots to add to this site.

As for the previous comment about talking face to face, yes that is probably true to a point. On the plus side, and I'm sure I speak for thousands here, we have made many friends, some world wide that if not for modern tech. and this site would have never happened...long live the HAMB

  2. Well I certainly would have never met anyone from Medford. :D :D

Hey when I was a kid there were peach orchards around Medford, are there still peaches down that way?

I'd say yes, AND no! [In general, on the Web-Esp. FB]

Same is true for the HAMB Pitman...only his name is Ryan (and he's not twenty any longer) ...and his pal "the German..."

There were peach, cherry, apple, and pear orchards, most are gone, a few pears are still here. At some point the land becomes more valuable for housing. On a side note, vineyards have taken off like wild fire, probably 20 or more now, even a vineyard license plate is now offered, look out Napa...lol.

  7. I'm not a conspiracy guy, but has anyone ever read whats being said about forums, especially fb?
    Its scary stuff.
I'm stuck between the old ways, and the new, like has been said, the old ways of communication were more honest. I can read tone very well, and know when someone's not truthfull, but you can't tell with today's communication.

So, what was the original question?...
    :)

  9. It is.
On FB, under "people you may know", I occasionally see some familiar names.
Including people I have done business with on my website, and friends of my father.
I've never contacted any of them, or mentioned any of their names, on FB.
But somehow FB knew we were connected.
My father emails one of his friends, from this computer, FB knows about it.
    Not a coincidence.

Someone needs to make a FB tracking blocker.
Even I would pay for that.

I'm on Facebook...so I'm part of the problem, but I hate the damn thing.
Facebook itself is a linear progression with no simple way to retrace your steps and go back to see something from months ago. Not one I can figure out anyway...
My BIGGEST beef with FB is that its ease of use has destroyed a lot of the forums etc that formally populated the net.
Just the other day a big local car forum "Newfoundlandmotorsports" disappeared without notice and a HUGE cache of local car history that had been built up over several years in a particular part of that site went with it.
All the local car guys are rotted that no notice was given, but to be honest, traffic across the site had dropped to the point that keeping it open just wasn't viable, so I guess that just killed it.
I totally blame that traffic decline on FB .
It's like an internet Walmart to the smaller local (yet interesting!) forums and sites. It just bowls them over and crushes them to the ground. The forum then reappears as a FB "group" and life goes on.
...but under FB's parasitic ways and rules.

Many were run over/off by the brash newbies. A lot of guys are not posting either. The gain demands a sacrifice. FB is a favorite pitch a bitch, right after Rodney Ratt Rodder.

I believe Chuck Berry was a prognosticator, being able to see the future when one of his song lines went something like this, "too much monkey business for me to be involved in". I believe the Rev Berry was speaking of twitter, facebook, instagram and the whole herd of social media that I hear my grandsons spouting.

I have come to really enjoy a road trip with my relatives. My wife and I exchange looks until we both start snickering at the silence coming from the backseat while my Son, Grandson, and Daughter-out-law are deep in thought on their I-phones, smart phones, P-phones, whatever. I think such behavior is so inconsiderate, but that's just me.

I joined FB a while back. I enjoyed rekindling long lost relationships and keeping in touch with friends/relatives.

But it is NOT a home for sound technical advice, trustworthy advertisers and history.

Some folks that used to be regulars on here were fantastic socialites, but probably weren't true contributors from a technical or historical point.

As HAMB became more busy and more crowded, some social conversations and contributions seemed to have become less popular. Perhaps the HAMB has become more pure?

I to am spending a bit to much time over on Face Book. And I refuse the "fancy Phone" thing. I think most guys think "Great, cats, what I had for dinner, Sharons new hair cut", etc. But just like here, it is what you make of it. All of my feeds are either my political stuff, local hot rod stuff, local history stuff, news, or Triumph motorcycles. It's not nearly as in depth as we are around here most of the time, but damned easy to put local stuff together quickly. I just posted at 4:00 that I was thinking of jumping in the 'Bucket and rolling to Pete's Fish and Chips for some dinner at 6, and I have four cars going already.

Now, that said, I'm not going anywhere. This is my home on the net as far as I'm concerned, and here I'll stay. It's a hell of a lot easier to talk about the very specific stuff we do with the other misfits out there that actually get it.... That'd be you guys!

  16. I'm 66 years old and retired. I work 4 days a week at the local Ace hardware store because I enjoy talking and helping people solve their problems. Not enough of that anymore. I have a flip phone, no camera, no facebook, no twitter, just a backup in case I have car trouble on the road. The other day I went into the lunch room to have a cup of coffee and two young gals were sitting at a table texting back and forth to each other. When I realized what they were doing I asked why would you not just talk to each other. The response was that this was easier to do without letting anyone else know what you were saying, when I was that age we called that whispering and it was considered rude. Time marches on but I choose to step out of that line. If you want to talk to me give me a call or better yet stop by the garage, just turn off the phone.;)
I enjoy the HAMB but this is as hi-tech as I'll ever get.

  17. That's precisely why I keep my hot rod life on the HAMB. I'm connected to all sorts of people on FB, but that's a whole different part of my life. It bugs the shit out of me that my boss and co-workers, my mailman, my bookie, my accountant, my loan shark, my plumber, my poodle washer, my grade 4 spelling teecher, my sister's ex-husband's brother's personal butt scratcher and a thousand other idiots all get notified every time I wipe my ass. I really don't see the attraction, but I have a hunch that bobwop summed it up fairly succinctly.

I do miss a lot of the old regulars. Even Rashy is gone.

Chip, I guess I'm one of the misfits for sure. Just went to a local eatery for some happy hour food and drinks, on the way I saw a T bucket driving, you and your thread instantly came to mind, looked at it to see what needed changing to make it traditional...lol

I miss some of the folks who used to be regulars here, I think that was the original point...I use FB only to research on Arab militaries (that's a part of my job), but like others I don't really care what Sally had for dinner or what Biff's favorite TV show is....This is still a great place to go for some great threads (like the ones on the GNRS, or Bonneville, for example), and some interesting builds (the Jesse Lopez coupe recreation, for example)...and there are still some really talented builders and flathead/Ford experts who can remember how many teeth there are on a '39 main gear, or what clearances to use on a 354" Chrysler on fuel......

So despite the reality that some really interesting people seem to have left, others still post, and still others have taken their place. So I'm staying here...

More business, less colorful characters. The 1st 8-10 years (all of it) on disk would educate the 100,000+ that have no idea what those early days were here.

Several dummy computer coms questions. When you say FB, do you mean a HAMB FB site, or just FB in general with HAMBers doing their thing with their HAMB friends without connecting to the HAMB at all? And, if there is a separate HAMB FB site that runs in parallel to this one, why so? Why isn't there any common / automatic connectivity? Why the heck don't we see their threads and inputs here if they are playing HAMB on their own uppity / VIP site?

Secondly, is the FB deal in any way responsible for all the gobly-gook spam I get on "health" issues every morning? I seem to get more and more each week. Gary

I'm on a few other groups that are failing and going down the tubes. I'd blame that on FB. Someone wrote FB is the internet's Wally World. It appears so. My kids, grandkids, family, and friends all have SmartAssed phones and all of those Pad things. No one actually talks anymore.
My family and friends are on Facebook. If I want to know what their nieghbor is wearing or what the dog shit, I could find out on FB.
But I've never been on FB or care to join. Although I have at least two 21 year old girlfriends there who want me to check out their pictures and plan a meeting. I also can get discounts on Viagra and other drugs. So it seems to me I should be on Facebook instead of here. Thanks to Yeyhaw Mail for that.
But I actualy like old cars more than 21 year old virgins so here I am reading this senseless post. I also notice many regulars are now irregular. I miss the good ole days.

FB "Face Book" is a separate entity (website) entirely independent of the HAMB. HAMBers who have posted on this thread referencing FB are acknowledging their participation in both forums.

oh, yes, very likely FB is responsible for your increase in SPAM email.

Gary, Face Book (FB) is a totally separate entity from the HAMB.......not some affiliate. HAMBers
who mention using FB are acknowledging using both forums for their communication/entertainment
    connections.

As for the increase in unwanted and unsolicited email advertising.....most likely that is due to FB
sharing info about you...and getting paid to do so.

  29. Just swapped a couple of HAMB PMs with Denise Sheldon. She is still here and posts occasionally. Miss her mega trip reports. She is good people. Hope to hook up with her at the Roundup this year.

  30. You don't see their posts, you get a small message reminding you
this person is on your ignore list, and gives you the option to read it anyway.
