Projects Should I pinstripe it or leave it

Here is a pic of my '64 olds 88 vert. I'm trying to decide if I should pinstripe it or leave it. My original plan was to but since I have painted it am somewhat undecided. I would like to keep it old Skool and not the low rider style if I do decide to do it. What do you guys think.

 

if you can go subtle on the stripes then stripes are the way to go in my own personal opinion.

I would not go full on Von Dutch with it, maybe something a little bit Tommy the Greek.

I like that that car is just striped on the hood and possibly trunk area. I would stay away from stripes down the sides as it will make a long car look a lot longer. I have been striping for a lot of years. when it comes to pinstriping I have always felt that less is more. You should see the car first, then look a little closer and say wow look at those nice stripes. Good luck with it.

Exactly what I was thinking. The pinstripes should accent the car rather than the car being a canvas for the pinstripe work.

 

Subtle stripes would look good, Like HRP said KISS method is best.

 

Sometimes less is more. Pretty car, doesn't need much merely an accent!

I think 48 Chev stated it best. Subtle is the key.

 

Will you still like your tattoo in ten years?
Will you still like your haircut in two years?
Will you still like your new girlfriend in 6 months?
Will you still like your pinstriping in 2 weeks?

Clean is what this car makes great, think twice.

I would just put the chrome back on call it done.. Pinstriping is way overdone.. But hey, I'm not always right...

 

Pinstriping should be like makeup on a beautiful woman, something that you don't notice when you look at it, just enough to accent the lines and draw your eyes to the area without realizing that it is why you notice them. So, yeas I would stripe it, but make sure to use restraint and let the beauty of the car remain the focal point.

 

I would put it back together and forget the pinstriping.The car has too many sharp edges to justify decorating it.Some cars just aren't made to be striped and this is one of them.Just my opinion folks;your mileage may vary.

 

no pinstripes. She won't miss them with all the chrome back on.

 

Hard to tell until it's finished. I'm thinking very light pin stripping. I'm more of a restro type car guy.

 

Pinstripe one side of the hood, step back, if you like it do the other side. If you don't, a damp rag with spirits and its gone. If you like it do the trunk.

 

No idea of your pinstriping skill level, but,
part of really knowing how to do something,
includes knowing when “not” to.

There is a time and a place.
I've seen absolute top notch pinstripers,
turn down paying jobs because the car didn't "need" them.

Some things are easy to do badly, much more difficult to do well.
I would put pinstriping a stock 60's GM in the latter category.

 

I think some very subtle striping could look good on this car, but only VERY subtle ones to accentuate the body lines and I also don't think you should go with traditional "Von Dutch" style striping, "Scroll style" would look much better on this car IMO.

I wouldn't pinstripe that car.. with the chrome back on it I bet it looks great... you could do some panel paint work to that body style and look great maybe... just my two cents.. in the end it's your ride.. do what makes you happy..

 

I think the pinstripe version of the car show above got a little too busy on up the hood.

 

Pinstripes don't have to be contrasting and swirly. I'm a big advocate for teardrops - stretched down a body line, you can get a nice effect and avoid the 'Gipsy Caravan' look. The only pics I could find are these that show an accent around the hood vent on the F1, and the barely-noticeable 2 color teardrops on the '41 trunk.
I say 'do it', but think outside of the box a little.

 

My car in my avatar is pinstriped. When done right, it adds a little more of a custom look to the car.

 

maybe do a little photo shop on it or draw up some on paper first still hard to tell without really being on the object ,but it might give you some idea of which way to go just my opinion just a small amount around the door handles cause it looks as you r leaving them on either way do what you want your car

 

I wish every car guy could read this quote...especially those who are contemplating irreversible acts like chopping the top, etc. It is pure hot rod/custom car gold!

 

I would say strip it but my dad is a striper so I think everything should be striped........

 

IMHO this car screams for the old saying...."Less is More"
Yes on the pinstripes..and I am with Beaner on the not to much or fancy.
