Features VINTAGE SPRINT CAR PIC THREAD, 1965 and older only please.

As far back as the late 1950s it wasn't uncommon for roll cages to be bolted on sprint cars and then raced as supermodifieds. I suspect the first car to run a cage in a actual sprint car race was the Vince Conze car at Ascot 1962, driven by Jimmy Davies.

 

I asked because I was told that a car built as a sprint in Santa Barbara, Ca in 57 was built with a cage and ran ascot in 57 or 58.

 

Here's a shot of a car at Ascot 1963. Don't know anything about it, though it's conceivable it may have been built in 57. (?)

 

Back sometime in the 60's , there was a magazine article on how to improve sprint car safety, can't remember the mag, may have been Car Life. It had a lot of artist conceptions with cages, leather side "curtains" and i think one shot of Herk's car with a conceptual drawing of a cage installed. Anybody have a copy they could post?

 

I think the Vince Conze car had the first "down tubes" also.

 

Hey all. Hope I am not hi-jacking the thread but I am trying to locate stooge 73-83. I am trying to uncover ANY information I can about Salay's Speed Shop in South Bend IN. I goggled that title and it lead me here to the HAMB where I discovered that stooge 73-83 worked at Salays from 1952-1957. He is the exact guy I need to talk to! BUT he has not been on the HAMB since March of 2014. All of his HAMB posting have been on this thread so I am hoping someone interested in this thread will know him and give me his contact info. I am looking for a name a telephone number, anything! Thanks for ANY help!

 

Here is our full size sprint. Built and raced by Dave Ruel in 1948 til 1955. The car is untouched and is a virtual time capsule.

 

If it is a time capsule of 1955, why the roll bar?

 

The first sprint car I saw in USAC was Jim Smoker at Reading opener 1964. A number 96 I think.

 

I'm not sure, when would have a roll bar been installed?

Any information about driver Joe Giusti from Sacramento driving the Jerry Pitman number 98 in the 1963-64 IMCa season?

 

Track roadsters ... I'm planning on building a couple of model cars and doing a painting or two of 1947-1956 track roadsters. I have the Radbruch book and the Wallen book, have done some searches online ... but am looking for pictures and/or leads to some color photos & information on car colors ... specifically the Howard Gardner #10 and the Rosie Roussell #76 ... I can take an educated guess but prefer to get it right in my my art. Also, would welcome any color, any car information too.
Have seen the Facebook pages on the roadsters, Hemmings piece on #101 and #93 survivors already.

Not exactly, my best guess would be around 1938 give or take.

 

I wonder how long it ran unpainted. It actually looks like it was ran pretty hard for a while before the Paint and chrome.

 

checked a 1965 IMCA yearbook[1964 results]it has Joe Giusti listed as a driver and Jerry Pitman as the owner of 98 sprint car but shows no points for either one.the yearbook has track by track results but only the top 6 in the feature.I'll try to check some other sources

 

I like to look at how the cowl panel transitions into the windshield area. It is hard to make those compound curves look that good. In the pictures without paint I cannot even see any weld seams. That is hard to pull off.

 

Aggie without a hat !!!!!! I reckon these go back to the mid 30s and is Aggies early if not first race car. The driver with the white helmet is Bud Sennett but other than Aggie I can't identify anyone else.

It's hard to look away from the race car, but there's what looks to be a pretty new Cord sedan parked just behind them...

 

I think this must be the Horn car that was built by Harry Lewis for the 1939 season. And the "Magnolia Park" signs in the background of the photo make you think that it was taken when he was racing in the South at either Lakewood or Greensboro since AAA ran both tracks at the time. With Ted posing with the Wards Riverside Power Grip rear tire he must have come to town early as part of his promotion deal with Wards. The photo may have even ended up in the local newspaper to promote both the race and the tires. Big name travelling drivers like Horn, Wilburn, Schrader, etc. all had deals with Montgomery Ward where they could get free tires. And they raced on regular highway tires in those days so they were available off the shelf. Those Power Grip rears worked just as well on your passenger car on dirt roads or your farm truck in the fields. Some drivers reportedly carried around letters of introduction from the Ward's home office in Chicago that explained the tire program to dealers in smaller towns that might not have heard of it.

BTW, this car had a very long racing life that lasted into the 1960s although it was modified over the years. A young Mario Andretti actually raced the car in URC using a Cadillac engine in 1961.
