R W, is that your 58? What engine, trans combo did you run and times? I do like to see some 58s like yours, that were used for other purposes. Thanks for sharing pics with us.

In my opinion the 58 Impala was the nicest looking Chevrolet of the 50's. The only thing i did not like was the coil springs front and rear. When road racing they wallered around like a hog. In my opinion it would have been great car with the right suspension. I thing the reason they are rare is because most of them were totaled.

  7. Marv- word I get is that rust was a serious issue on '58's, worse I'm told than others.
Q - NICE! Is that the movie car?

They had rust problems around the headlight eyebrows, similar to a number of other models had rust problem areas in various places. I think that was the main spot on them that almost every one developed that dreaded rust.

  12. \'58 Impala, Peter\'s car.jpg My friend Peter Barris owned this car in the mid to late 60's. Had a fuel injected 283. Started life stock with factory copper paint, later morphed into a cobalt blue color, dechromed, wood dash with Stuart Warner gauges, had glass front fenders, 4.56 gears, Muncie, J.C. Whitney pleated seat covers. It was insanely fast, scary for it's time.
I thought Peter and I would get killed at a young age street racing this thing. He was absolutely fearless. Raced a lot in Medford, Ma. out of Wellington Circle and raced heavily in Brooklyn, over in Jackson Height where he attended the Aeronautical institute.
Odd thing was he lost his life in a single engine plane crash into the Long Island Sound when he struck a WNBC tower guy wire.
I lost my best friend that day when I declined the invitation to fly with him.
It wasn't the Impala that got him.

  13. My '58 Impala I owned while attending College in Boston, mid to late 60's. I also owned a Fuelie Bel Air Sport Sedan, and a '58 Corvette. My dad instructed me to downsize the fleet so he and mom could have their oversized heated 3 car garage back.
I sold the Impala to a guy named Jimmy Keating (Big Shorty) from Lawrence who later went on to become a Mass. State Trooper.
Wonder if he still owns it?
Wish I still owned it.......and many more that left my life. My \'58 Impala coupe.jpg

Jimmy, so sorry for the loss of your friend Peter, but thank you for sharing the pictures of your's and his 58s. How cool was that, that both of you were able to get your hands on fuel injected 58s? I know the deal of your dad wanting his garage to use for himself, my dad made me get rid of a cool 27 T 2 door that I had grand plans on building because he wanted to use his garage for his car, not for my hot rodding desires. :(

Technically the beds they had were leftovers from '57. These were used in until mid year '58 when they ran out. This based off of what I read on the Internet.

The 55 & 56 looked like the same box too, sans chrome trim, IDK, so maybe they were all the same?

Likely the same tooling was used to make those boxes. I guess the chrome was to drum up more business for 57 model year.

They didn't sell as many as they wanted in 55/56.
