I did a father & son project with my oldest son (DJ), I know it's an off topic car but he learned to do body work by hand & the mechanics of an old engine over the summer. I still have 2 other kids with projects in the wings & my wife saved a clunker from the scrapper ( same scrapper as DJ's VW)

  4. Damn Dude, who pissed in your corn flakes this morning? I applaud the OP's efforts to use this as a teachable moment for his son. I would rather see a kid driving this instead of a Prius. And what law has he broken, other than not heeding your dubious advice? I look at cars all the time that "aren't for sale", or that I don't need, or can't afford. I never buy anything without shopping for it first. Kiwijeff nailed it earlier in this post...this car is cool because someone thinks it is. This "Charlie Brown" hotrod just needs a little bit of love.

When I was about your Sons age one of my neighbors bitched to my Mom about us having a couple of old cars on our property that I was working on (and we lived on 3 acres in the country ) My Mom said "Yes, but I know right where he is every night !" (thanks Mom :))

Same with my two Sons, they had their first project cars at 14 and I never had to worry about drugs, or them getting into any trouble, I knew where they were and where their extra money was going.

So what I am saying is, buying that car for your kid might turn out to the the very best investment in his future that you could ever make, and it will be a great bonding experience for the two of you. Some things you can't put a price on.

    Don

PS, that Olds is SOLID !

  8. My first vintage car in my name was a 4-door. From behind the wheel it's no different than a 2-door, and just as much fun, but you don't have to worry so much about it because they're not worth as much. Great car for a kid.

Old Wolf..... All I did was ask if it was for sale. I wasted nobody's time today. We had a good time. He goes back to school tomorrow, one of the best in the nation if he sticks it out and graduates from that school he will have some type of scholarship. The lessons he learned today was to ask permission before you look at other folk's stuff and if you see something, take the time to check it out. You never know. I let a 57 Bel Air 2 dr hardtop get away simply because I did not check it out.

If the car was legit, there was a possibility I could have bought it. I could have found a way. I'll admit I caught up in it today too. My son is in love with chrome and fins he even had spot on the dash picked out for a Hula Girl. He knows what to work for.

Here's the scoop on the Olds. I figured it out. I knew there was something up about that car, then it dawned on me.

It's not a scrap car. The yard owner is a car collector and he put it out there for shock value. He buys and stockpiles cars as a hobby. The building that the car is in front of houses his collection of collector cars. I had forgotten about that. I suspect the Olds was never really scrapped. Think of the advertisement he gets. I bet he gets 100 offers a day.

It's genius if you think about it. Everybody dreams of finding a car like that. A discarded piece of Americana that you could nurse back to health like Charlie Brown's Christmas Tree. Folks in Alabama have a soft spot for old cars. They'll keep a broken down old car in a garage while the new one sits in the weather. So they'll take their stuff to him in hopes their old cars might get a reprieve. Sometimes they do.

So tonight after the excitement of the hunt and the snapping back to reality we took a trip down to the basement. We visited with a car a little newer, one we see everyday, He sat in the seat and even picked out a spot on the dash for his Hula Girl . "This one ain't so bad is it son? "No this one will do" he said, "Lets get busy. What can I do?"

A slightly later era but I'll think it do for dreams of chrome and v8s but sorry no fins.

Old man kept it till he died, kids tried to sell it for a lot of money, finally learned it wasn't worth collector car money cos it looked rough, wouldnt crank and it wasnt a Camaro or a HemiCuda. They paid someone to haul it to the metal recycler, or maybe, like in this case, a junkyard. And at least it aint crushed into a square and on a boat headed to China.
If it speaks to him, and he listens, it's a good thing.

Old Wolf, and his way of thinking, are the reasons young kids are leaving the hobby. Take time to talk to that tire kicker, and you may pass on knowledge, or learn something you didn't know. A "get off my lawn" attitude , will send them to a group that will accept them "The tuner crowd?" and then, we as a hobby have lost.

  14. My middle son liked the ford fairlanes. He drove two different 64 Htps a green one with a 289 four bbl & four speed and a Red one that had a 351 W and automatic. We junked two 64 four doors and one 63 four door for parts. He later drove Camaros & firebirds. Unfortunately he died in a car crash when he was 17 . that was 21 years ago. I still have the fairlanes. I think the fairlane sport coup pictured would be a great first car for your son. And its still HAMB material. When you get it or whatever vehicle for your son have your wife get in the car and with it not running mash the gas pedal all the way to the floor. Then you adjust the throttle linkage so that the carb butterflys only open 3/4 of the way. Poor mans governor LOL! Sometimes when you see a car like the olds sitting out like that one its because the owner gets some kind of perverse enjoyment telling folks its not for sale. As for the olds in question Now you gotta admit the chances of winning the lottey are better than the chances. That you will buy a car that isn't for sale That you haven't already got a big wad of cash to buy it . That your son will get to bang some girl in the back seat? Its just not likely.

  15. Its not kids that waste my time. Its grown up adults. Any more it goes like this. Some one drives up. And they get out and ask about the vehicles. I reply do you have any money? Are you ready willing and able to buy today? If they answer in affirmative I state show me a $1000 in cash and I will let you look. Ive actually had a couple potential buyers who had the cash! Most state their just looking. My reply is look someplace else Im not running a friggin museum. Better yet If my wife is the one they deal with. She states do you see any for sale signs on them? Ive sold a half dozen units in the last year. And every one had been to guys that ive known for decades. they call on the phone and ask about a specific think they want. and come and buy it. There is no sales to be made from dreamers & lookie lou lowballers. I don't necessarily care about we as a hobby. In not a socialist or communist. For me at this stage in my life its about nickles in my pocket. One exception is my children & grandchildren They can have anything they want for free. In fact I try to give them something every time they come by.

I Drove a '58 Chrysler Windsor in High School. I loved that car!! There was a good lesson learned here about the hunt for cars. Getting permission to look at a car sitting is very important. If it was not for sale at least you met a car guy and maybe some other time he will have another car for sale. Having a good network of people you know is what keeps our hobby alive. Just like the hamb. I think its awesome to have a father son project to work on. I built a '68 Chev pick up with my step son and not only did it teach him a lot about craftsmanship and hard work but it strengthened my relationship with him.

  18. Ok. I live at the junction of HWY 90 & 93 11 miles west of Pocahontas Ark. There is a pretty good satellite view of my hoard. My PH number is 870-248-9172. You can call me and maybe ill save you a trip and tell you to get lost on the phone? Or maybe not? Be like the Gas Monkey Guy and show up with a trailer and a big wad of cash and ill give you the tour.

I can sympathize. A few years back I had my 50 Coupe parked in my yard, mainly because, Well, It was my Yard! While I was on the couch minding my own business I hear the distinctive whine of a Flathead starter. I walk out side and there is this carload of Rednecks of all ages all converged around my little red Coupe. The hood was up, the drivers door was open with this guy sitting behind the wheel. "What's going on?" says I "We were just looking at your car for sale" said them "Do you see a sign on it? says I " Sorry, we thought nobody was Home" says them. I mean WTF. Deep down I think they were trying to steal it. I had the key so they were just turning over the starter.
I mean who does that? It takes some nuts to go into somebody's yard, pop the hood of their car, get in it and then try to crank it. Heck they might as well came in and fixed 'em some cornflakes.

Below is the only pic I have of my beloved coupe, that's my uncle and cousin. I'm about to pop the hood.

As far as the back seat goes, not required.I remember riding to the park on my Harley about 2 in the morning. We parked it and crawled on the Merry go Round. I still remember that very well and I think she does also.
I'll ask her when she gets home from the store.

"I" like the fairlane better anyway to be honest, One of my uncles let me borrow a burgundy/maroon 64 he had, a few times when I was in my teens, It was a post car tho but looked very cool sittin high, front and back, with aluminum slots wider in the back and 4s in the front, It may have been just the 260 v8, I cant remember, but it sure sounded off with twin straights and three on the tree.

I hope you can actually let the boy have that one to do with it as he pleases within reason, that sometimes can be hard for a dad especially with a car thats been in the family already,or thats valuable, that means dont just name it his, then you are the one thats always driving it.etc.:D
Ive seen it and lived it when I was young.........and try not to get too mad if he has a fender bender in it:rolleyes:....just sayin:)

Congrats to your son and a big thumbs up to you.
I like it, got any pics of the whole car?

The car is worth about $2000-$2500 around here anyway, but $1200-$1500 would be a good price on it. I've done pretty well parting out the '58 Oldsmobiles I've got, and that's just from selling glass, trim, etc, not any major mechanical components or interior pieces! If NOTHING else, the OP's son would get some hands-on experience, and if he were to grow tired of the car, he could learn some business skills either bartering for another car or parting it out. Sadly, it's worth more in pieces than as a whole.

  23. Damn that takes a lot of balls. If I even see I car for sale I go knock on the door to see if I can look at it.Damn , I still cant belive that!!!!Bruce.

I think some piece of excrement stole my HP 289 air cleaner off my F-1 because that joker is gone.....I've looked everywhere. I would not have left it off. I'm sick of these gawkers and rubberneckers riding by in their beat up junk. They are just cruising for something to steal.

  26. o_OYep I agree has nothing to do with the thread. ;)

On a side note I have to agree with Old Wolf on the money thing to a point. I say to a point because I don't make my living hustling old cars so if someone wants to look at something that I have for sale it is no big deal for me. But when it comes down to the can my mechanic look at it then I always suggest that they can bring the mechanic and the asking price, if they don't have asking then their mechanic is damned sure not going to waste my time. ;)

disclaimer: nothing that I just said has anything to do with the original intent of the thread.

I think that Fairlane would make a much better choice.........easier to work on, parts are WAY cheaper, and you can go to any auto parts store and get the parts you need. Plus, they are a clean design. A few tricks and they look great.

    Sorry for getting off topic.
As far as the Olds I have not quite given up on it yet. It's been out there a while and I'm going to look further in to it. If it's meant to be then it's meant to be. If not we have plenty of stuff to have fun with.
    I'll keep you all posted.
