Tommy, this is Pence's Drag Strip near Piqua. Ohio. Also called Shelby Raceway, I believe. It's a gravel pit now.

  15. Naw, we weren't tougher. Just too dumb to know we were in danger.

This IS a Malco Gasser. Thank you FoMoCo, for forever changing a beloved class of drag racing into something that people STILL confuse for funny cars. Stillrunner, this is the car Montgomery built with Ford's help after they didn't think that having their engine (SOHC) in a championship quality Willys was "good enough" for business. It burned gasoline and was a legal AA/GS car, but looking like a gasser, not so much. It was one of the later model bodies that changed and shortened the future of gasser classes.

They've not had time to react. Stuff like this happens quickly!

Function should dictate form over sentimentality. Of course Ford preferred their Mustang over the Willys: they sold Mustangs not Willys. Who do we blame for the end of Top Gas, Fuel Altereds, Comp Coupes and Modified Roadsters? The sanctioning body! The car met the rules. Blame Wally, not Henry.

This SW&C Mustang predates George's by three years. Maybe you need to blame Doug?

Good points and I agree on most, except the SWC Mustang did NOT come out before Montgomery's. On with the show.

What killed the gas class & all the other heads up racing was the lack of cars due to the extreme cost to reward. If you were drag racing back then you tried to find something in class racing you could afford to do but it was a moving target. Whatever class you were in the engines got more exotic & costly as did the cars themselves to build & race. It was endless. All you have to do to see the remnets of class & heads up racing is attend a NHRA national & go to the comp pits & look what they run now.

And it still continues. To be competetive in Pro Stock, you "need " a 250 k $ rear end...
