Just stumbled on this video: Looks like surface rust only and wouldn't work for seams etc. but still pretty fricken cool none the less. Posted using the Full Custom H.A.M.B. App!
Out here water will be outlawed to form rust in the first place. Posted using the Full Custom H.A.M.B. App!
Source: Laser Cleaning with High Power Short Pulse Laser: "Laser cleaning is a process that removes scale, oxides, dust and oil from materials. Using a short-pulse laser, the surface is cleaned to the bare metal quickly and with minimal heat affect. It can be an in-line or batch process performed directly prior to a process that requires a clean, bare metal surface. The fiber delivered TRUMPF TruMicro 7050 accomplishes this with a laser power of 750 watts and a pulse duration of 30 ns."
Just guessing that machine that cleaned off something the size of a hinge is the size of a minivan & $100,000+++. Better get blaster, discs, or molasses out... b/c we I will be over 100yrs & model A will be 150yrs b4 we're lasering off rust in our hobby shop.

Yup. For now all I have is my 10 year old craftsman angle grinder and a wire wheel but it's cool to dream! Posted using the Full Custom H.A.M.B. App!
I need one of those big enough to move a whole car through. Like a car wash. With primer guns at the end.
That's cool. If like to try that. I by it's relatively inexpensive and since it's already used in our water systems disposal should be safe and easy. Posted using the Full Custom H.A.M.B. App!
I'm gonna bump this to see if anyone else has any input of how it works (lay mans terms) and what it costs?
There has been a video of a laser rust/paint removal setup floating around FB for the past couple of weeks. This one. I'd imagine that the equipment is quite spendy at this time. If it doesn't show a rusty panel with slots in it sitting on a work table hit the refresh button on the bottom of the video.
Yeah... for starters, both videos showed other than sheet metal. The first is about 1/4" thick steel, the second is cast iron. Is the rust really removed, or just the colour changed? How is the cleaned surface for painting? It sure looks cool.
