I've been assuming I need a 5" tach as a starting point, I guess could you install a larger face on a smaller tach?

 

Cool! I have been looking at TC, TD and TF tachs as cores, still BLOODY expensive. Never thought of using a later tach like MGB or Alfa...

Any one know what this goes to? Looks like a mid-50s King-Seeley. The sardine can is like what came on Willys Wagons and Trucks from 1952 through 1955.

Admitting you have a problem is the first step towards recovery, Titus. Although in your case, that probably just means more gauge panels!

Found this one at the Portland swap a few years back. It wasn't cheap but the fact the guy sellin it didn't realize it was a deuce 3 window dash it was still pretty fairly priced. Had to been done back in the day by someone that had talent. Completely smoothed with a boat panel and perfectly spaced holes for a starter button and four switches. Instead of the standard speedo/tach in the center I'm gonna run a speedo and a big 3 1/2" dual (gas&20amp) gauge with 2 5/8" smooth bezel temp and oil pressure on either side.

 

Here's the dash for my 27 Modified. The dashboard is in a 32 style. The dash insert is not a Haneline - it's a one-off cast piece. Just needs the dash painting, the instruments wiring and the mechanical speedo swapping for an electronic one with a GPS sender.

Also thinking about putting a second oval switch panel on the right hand side with another couple of lever switches, 2 idiot lights and a battery cut off switch in the centre.

My junk; '32 commercial dash trimmed to fit stock '26-7 roadster dash flange. Will be filled with an engine turned insert, '32 SW speedo & 1944 dated SW ammeter & temp gauge.

 

This is something I pulled together a few years back. Recently decided someone else should make it theirs.

 

Beautiful panel, what is the source? My guess would be about 1930's vintage, and from a higher end auto. Very nice engraving and shape.

 

You're close Russ, it's from an obscure 1929 model. I sold it here recently and will leave it to the buyer to decide whether to broadcast it. Having fun with the guessers is part of the enjoyment of these unusual pieces. Here's a closer look at just the cluster;

5" Stewart Warner Curved Glass gauges in a '32 dash. Ignition switch came out of an old boat. Switch (for fuel pump) is weird 1930s-ish NOS. I'll be making a bezel for the hole in the top center, it allows you to see the stock cowl-tank indicator. Choke knob will get replaced with a 1940 Merc knob.

RainierHooker, your gauges are killer. The vacuum gauge in the tach looks super cool

 

I like it but what about the rest of your auxiliary gauges? JohnnyA

 

The plan is to make a small panel out aluminum and mount it between the steering column and the cowl, set back a little from the main dash. An Ammeter, Water Temp, and Oil Pressure gauges are planned.

Aww hell, you don't need no aux gauges...she'll puke when she's hot, grind when she's outta oil, and refuse to start when the battery's dead. Who needs gauges? Hahahahaha!

 

@gwhite Agreed. What I have is more than what Henry provided. That's why I'm not in a rush to get them. That, and the cost of three tulip-pointer gauges...

This is a cool thread. There have been many awesome gauges made throughout the last century.

Here are a couple of speedometers I've picked up over the years. They are quite large at 6 1/4" wide. I have 1 in my coupe as well. You can see the standard SW Winged speedometer as a reference in size difference.

This dash arrived just the other day, so I thought I would snap a pic of my gauge stash. Just need to work out what will go where.

I rebuilt the stock mechanical fuel gauge / used the special float compatible with today's harsh gas. Keeping it as simple as possible - these are the only gauges my car is getting. My Iphone will be my speedometer / odometer. And my ears will be my volt meter and tach.

 

This is my dash that I'm working on. 1932 ford coupe dash, with 1933-1934 look. Studebaker cluster and reversed 1952 jaguar tachometer. The tachometer will be placed under the studebaker cluster. And 2 stewart warner gauges on each side of the tachometer. That is the plan.

I have been playing with some speedometers, Got some to work with switching parts. Use my lathe to calibrate, It has a variable speed belt. Use a Lazer tachometer to get the speed of the spindle correct.
