This Isn't in motion but is interesting.

 

Wondered that too. From what I've heard and read they were testing the newer tires from M&H and may not have anticipated the amount of tire growth and deformation that ended up with the zoomies cutting the tires. Also, these pics look to be early 60s and I think the accident was in a newer car in '66. A friend of mine has the actual accident photos I imagine have been seldom seen. Only glanced at them briefly myself though. Also got some of the legal papers back and forth between M&H and Dick Goss, mostly requesting pieces of the tires and estimated worth of car.

 

Looks like it's going faster then it was....

I think you're right...this car doesn't have the "zoomie" headers that started in '65...I didn't realize that Dick Goss had passed, he was a good guy, was able to attract talent to build and drive his cars (Don Yates, Lefty...), and a pretty good wrench too....

Great shots of a forgotten dragster...actually was a Fuller chassis, details on the "Fuller pictures" on Don Ewald's site...I think it topped 180 but kept breaking drive train parts...according to Evelyn Fuller (who narrated much of the Fuller thread), Ed Donovan decided that he was making hemi parts and not Offy parts, so abandoned the project....would have been neat to hear it, a blown Offy!

steel bodied, front-end tube frame ... it was pioneering for its time, constructed by Mike Hoag who later formed M&S welding with Sherm Gunn. I think that this was the first blown BB Chev, blower manifold was homemade....Bovan was a racer, started with a silver 'Vette and later went to modified production '55 Chev. Later Mike Hoag build a more advanced Camaro-bodied car, really advanced for its time, 'glass body, but with stock doorhandles, etc. They ran this motor and then Barry McGowan's drag boat 426 Chrysler. Steve was a good guy, easy going, great engine builder (I learned a lot from him) but sadly met a bad end....

Remember AA/GD? These train-type cars were dominant in the class, but NHRA did away with it....

That is the Fisher & Greth top fueler. The injector scoop is the give away. I have loved that design since I first saw it on the SS roadster in 1960. I had the very great pleasure to meet Red two years ago, and I told him how much I admired his scoop design since I first saw it. A few weeks later he called and said to meet him at the CHRR at Famoso. He dug out the mold and made a scoop for me! He said it was not to be a wall hangar, it was meant to be used. Used it is, on my roadster.

 

Dean, we have similar tastes in injector scoops, I also loved the one on the SS roadster, so ordered one from them, $25, came in primer, just cut two injector port holes in it, then screw holes, paint, and on it went:

 

Jim Kerr at Castlereagh (Sydney) International Dragway circa 1976/77. This car was originally built by John Maher with an injected motor on fuel,

and in the posted photo it is on alky as a BB/D. Also raced by Morrie Carlton (below)

and now restored as Ross and Jude Preen's Banshee cacklefest car as seen here in Dan Kaplan's photo.

and speaking of Speed Sport scoops:

The Greek in the black shirt...I don't know all the details, but when the Speed Sport guys moved from Tucson to Blue Island, IL, they hooked up with the Greek, and Don Maynard became his engine man...the noticeable part is the scoop, but there was also the performance; Maynard had learned a great deal about how to make fuel motors run with the SS crew, and took his skills with him when he partnered with the Greek....tragically he was killed on the way to the '62 (?) Smoker's meet in a road crash...the Greek ran that meet, and, when he turned a 7.99 Bernie Mather, the announcer, just called out the time and that said in a heavy voice, "That was for Don Maynard."

This is Chris's Stuckey car, before the nose...the Greek had a habit of wheelstands and I remember Stuckey at the trial runs at San Gabriel saying "notice the pushbar key, don't wheelstand or it'll be your ass!" Chris did, of course, wearing off the bottom of the key....we use the words "fearless" too much, but that word described the Greek...if you ever saw him drive, you understand (but I think he only got upside down once)...and he is still racing at 80+ years!
