I got a couple Solid days in on the old hot rod this weekend. I decided to keep drudging through the work on the trunk. The rear below the decklid panel was in tuff shape, rotten here and there and pretty crusty all round. So it had to come out. the Vertical triangle supports for the drip rails were rotten and the panel that the decklid latches to was smashed and rotten. Every single screw was broken off in its hole as well. I doesn't look like I did much but what a tedious fuck around. Glad it's Done.

I have been really struggling with the look of the car from the rear. It pretty well looks like an unfinished hunk of shit to me write now. The rear cross member seems to be the root of the problem. It looks like shit. I don't want to run a stock tank and I`m not into the kick the rails up to fallow the rear body line and put the spreader bar on with a push bar. That Reminds me of a trailer Hitch. So I`m thinkin Roll Pan to clean it all up.

I ended up using the front header off that 39 ford sedan roof skin that I cut up for my roof insert and deck lid skin. It`s peaked in the centre witch didnt work for me but it`s way too wide as well so I just cut the peak out. Then spent an eternity trimming and lining it up. In the end it sure cleaned up the back of the car. Now I just need to lop off the rails flush with the cross member and figure out how to transition them into the body.

Work on the old hot rod continued this weekend. I started off by changing out my torque tube. The torque tube I had in the car was a 4 cylinder one. As you can see they are shorter and don't work if your running a v8. My orig plan was to shorten my 39 but I was able to find a 34 v8 one so I opted for that. heres the difference.

To put a 34 torque tube on a 39 banjo you have to die grind the end so it will fit.

After that I got to work on finishing up the rear x member. Trying to get it to transition into the body smoothly without looking so unfinished and goofy. Some pie cutting and adding a piece to the inner wheel well to drop the roll pan took care of that.

Continued work on the floor of the old hot rod this weekend. Rolled some beads in the front half floor pan. It was awkward as fuck trying to hold that big panel and roll the beads by my self. So they aren't perfect. But not bad either. Then I fit it and welded it in. I'm feeling a light at the end of the tunnel as far as the sheet metal work is concerned.

how deep was the bead roller? that's 2 pieces (l&r) along the drive shaft tunnel right?
I hope you took some pictures of that one.

I used 18gauge

It was just one big piece. I used my new Baileigh 36" power bead roller, with a little planning there was no need to cut it. I step rolled the centre so the flange on the tranny tunnel sits flush. Then I plug welded it in the car as one piece. After I got it in the car I plug welded the tranny tunnel in. then I cut the strip out from under the tranny tunnel. I figured it would be easier that way than trying to hold and align all the pieces separately.

Back to work on the coupe this weekend and last. Started clawing my way through finishing the trunk. The trunk lid ruffly fit the opening when it was set in there so now it's a matter of getting the hinges working and getting it fitting and swinging. I only had one of the orig blocks that the hinges attach to on the car, so a friend of mine cast me one up off the orig.

After that was ground out and looking half ass I directed my atention to the rotten drip rail on the top opening of the decklid.

I was able to find a orig one to repair the rotten one.

After that I fixed up the rotten quarter pannel braces.

Now all thats left is a bit of decklid repair and final fitment and get the latch working. that should only take like 20 hours. lol

 

Good to see you are back at it! Gives me some inspiration to get going on my coupe.

 

Got Back to work on the old coupe this weekend. I spent all day friday Fucking with the deck lid, trying to get it lined up, swinging and latching. I was alot of pissing around but she's all done. Saturday I made a crossmember hump and the interior cover pannel for behind the below the deck lid pannel. I Got it all done. Finally the trunk is done aside from mounting the gas tank and tail lights.

Does anyone have any good ideas for tail lights? I want to keep it pre 41.

Sunday I picked up a 41 lincoln overdrive tranny that I have some plans for with this car as well. you'l have to wait and see what happens there and so will I for that matter lol.
