I needed to do a little work on the inside of the rear quarter.
I made up a couple of simple pieces, first this along the bottom of the panel to stiffen it up. 20130507_113202a.jpg

Then this vertical piece, which will give me something to work off of when I construct the rear bulkhead.

You can also see the piece of square tube (blue), which will form part of the bulkhead.

This also now gives me a continuous rectangular shape to fit an access/inner panel at a later date, which will hopefully look quite 'factory' (ha ha).

    This is blasphemously awesome.

Some of my favorite stories are old hot rodders working with what they could get. My dad and his many common shoebox fords with hopped up flat heads because they were cheap because everyone was swaping out to ohv motors. Or my friend Joe Willy who was building drag cars out of other guys scrap piles and beating them, because they would work harder and study more.

Your project is not the most masterful creation but damnit your doing a hell of a job. Hard work cost more than parts, so in my eyes you have an advantage.

  14. I see what looks like a vw heater channel under the door. Is the plan to put this back on a vw floorpan?

I intend to channel the body over a traditional type frame, then build a floor, again, just as if this was a Deuce.
I won't try to use the bug floorpan (I don't even have one!). It'll be easier to use fresh sheet metal.

    Thanks Kail.
I really appreciate the work you do over at Goolsby, and even referenced one of your builds earlier in the thread.

No, I won't put this back on the VW floorpan. I'll channel it over a traditional style frame, then make up a floor in the usual way.
The heater channels are an interesting point though because they provide a good frame for the body.
By drilling the spot welds which attach the B posts to the heater channel, I was then able to 'slide' it along the channel then re-attach it (this was necessary because I had shortened the doors). Alternatively I could have cut and removed a section of the channel then welded it back together.
I imagine that these heater channels will form part of the sub-rails or floor.

  20. Steve owns my original hot rod, the one in my avatar. He has owned it 17 years, and just got it running this year. He ran it at the Pendine Sands event. All the car needs to finish the restoration is new paint. Hot Rods are Steve's hobby. He lives in Brighton.

Keep at it Simon, I love making things out of stuff that kinda works, I too don't have the skill/money/space for 'speciallist' tools, just got a welder and a couple of grinders.

I have started to mock up the body. It's flimsy at this stage but will get stiffened up soon. 20130321_140514a.jpg 20130321_140543a.jpg

This would look so good on top of my 1929 Chevy frame.

I better go look for rustfri, cheap and avalible bug body.  :D
