Technical ***How was your summer? The Sept 2014 Banger Meet***

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by Crazydaddyo, Sep 2, 2014.

  1. Few pictures from the other day. An evening with a few four bangers on a rolling road session along with a token flathead.
    Take these cars…

Insert them into this tin barn,

Sign away for someone to drive your car hard whilst you stand and watch/wince…

Gary's old T - now Rory's, brought along by Juggs.

We stood around, drank tea, and ate biscuits whilst we swapped each car on in turn for three taster runs on the rolling road with a little tinkering in between.

very interesting some real figures thanks

  3. Real figures and scary noises...

  4. What for setup is Phil's A running, He seemed to have the best readouts. With all the hipe about overheads I would have thought the Riley be on top.

  5. Ported A block at 60 thou over, B crank, 1.7" inlets, Winfield crowfoot head, single 97 on a downdraft (the one Snyders sell - was it a Dan Price design?) and a 'touring cam'. This is Artiki's old engine.

That is great Info Phil, thanks for sharing.

What was the difference between run #1, #2, and #3?

Why was run #2 so much better then #1 and #3

    .

  7. Betwixt 1 & 2 I did a jet change on the new 97. Dropped from 45 to 43. As for why the power dropped off again I believe it may well have been temperature. We crammed six cars through on a taster session in four hours.

  8. Well, posted this in the august tread somehow! so here is some of my new goodies! :D 10612886_767111906685597_5393640421657140198_n.jpg 10624610_767111910018930_4247146656202066930_n.jpg

  9. Not much new here. I drove the heck out of the Coupe this summer.
I'm not sure if you guys heard the news but Neal Jern passed away a few weeks ago. Sad news we have lost another truly great in the Banger world

Sad to hear about Neal. I talked to him a few months ago, a fantastic guy.

My Summer was collecting and rebuilding parts. GMC Bubba did an amazing job on my old trashed distributors.

I found these high quality cloth covered wires and fantastic insulators with boots that fit my Riley. They are for early VW Beetles. Price was about $35.00 del. ImageUploadedByH.A.M.B.1410999574.441485.jpg

  11. So cranked my engine over today for the first time. No fuel. Just wanted to make sure everything was working. Anyways it cranks over really slowly. Like a low battery. Checked battery. Checks out good. Checked the electric connections. Good.

Could it be I am fighting compression?

Pulled the plugs cranked over fast.

    Thoughts?

This is a rebuilt engine that hasn't been broken in yet. With a super winfield head.

I haven't posted in a while. Had trouble with the A, took months to find the problem, turns out the ballast resistor I was using to supply the 6v coil had developed a bad connection, not bad enough to not spark with the plugs out but no spark under compression.
Decided I would see how it goes with a 97 instead of the SUs. So I am making a manifold to suit, keeping the SU manifold so it will be an easy swap if I want to go back.
As it is a right hand drive the throttle set up is different from most on here,
Any one have any bright ideas?

Nice work Brendan good to see you are still playing with the A
I am sure you will find the Stromberg easier tuning than the SUs
Must try and catch up soon

Thanks Colin, Had to renovate the house to pay for my sins (Purchase of a 46 ford coupe)
Linkage arrangement so far below, I think it will work.
Is the only return spring the one on the pump pivot? I am not sure where else I could fit one?

  16. I have no idea! :p try it :)

  17. Have to agree with you and lots of contacts but no parts.
I did score a pair of 81`s off the auction site all built and ready to run.
Just need to find me a manifold and a head.
I pulled the pan for a look and except for some sludge and the oil pump screen laying in the bottom of the pan, it looks fairly decent. I will find out more when I have the head on the bench.

  19. Well I just wanted to report that I fired it up, it started even though i thought it was cranking too slow. ran for about 10 seconds....enough time to walk around from the drivers side and see that the carb is running fuel down onto the floor like a faucet and run back and shut it off.

Might be flathead Ford 6 tappet. I used them once in a B. I ground down the OD about .015" (as I remember--long time ago) because it was oversized, and I wanted to put them into a together running engine---otherwise, I would have reamed the block holes. Flathead Chrysler product is another possibility, although I remember doing some research, I don't remember how much work would be involved to use them.

  25. Isn't the stock tappet Ø .590 ?
The block can be opened up to take the Chrysler 6 cyl, Ø.623 or Ø.631

I don't have one out of a engine so you could be right.
