We should get this going and keep it going :)
Let's see all the examples of what you have painted, what you are planning to paint, equipment you used and where you did it.
It would be great to have a thread devoted to just that.

I painted the third VW Bug I owed in my driveway. I used DuPont Centari (sp?) Mars Red with my dad's tiny DeViblis compressor. I remember using tweezers to pick out the bugs as it dried.

I was about 17 when I did this.

I painted my '32 five window in my graveled back yard outside the garage, 32 coats of red Nitrocellulose lacquer. My Mom thought I was crazy...
"How many times are you gonna paint that damned thing?" That was 1958, at my Grandma's house.
If you walk back the drive to the front of the garage, there is STILL red gravel...

Painted the engine bay and interior of my unibody in the garage.
All my painting aside from the flake is done with a 4 oz touch up gun as I haven't made up my mind on what to buy as a better gun.
Also shot this bass and pedal car. Shadows make the pedal car look zebra striped.

  6. Good thread Larry. I have done all the primer work on this in my garage and plan on painting it there as well. I will be using lacquer so I will be facing a few less concerns that if I was spraying BC/CC.

I'd like to hear about how guys are dealing with the potential health risks associated with shooting modern BC/CC at home. Or are you just crossing your fingers and hoping for the best???

  14. Fumes really bugged me the last couple times we painted stuff at my kid's house. Found this gizmo at last years Twin Cities Roadster swap for $25. Works real good, fresh air all the time.

I wear a respirator every time. Have a couple of fans I run with furnace filters on them.
I know it doesn't do it all... but it's all I can do at home.

I guess I should elaborate a bit, I need to paint a vehicle that is not a hot rod, way O/T, and is going to be beaten like a red-headed stepchild. The paint on this POS needs to be REALLY tough and durable, which is why I am asking about health issues associated with home spraying BC/CC.
For a garage kept hot rod, I would just shoot acrylic lacquer and not even give it a second thought, done it several times in the past. I was hoping to avoid even mentioning lacquer because of all the ensuing bullshit that results.
Lost angel, love your truck, noticed it on here several times. RichB the hood/respirator deal looks like a possible, I also plan to switch over to turbine, I think the reduced overspray should help. Hope to continue to hear more on the health side of the modern paint issue. from what I understand, there are major health issues associated with even handling the modern isocynate based paints, let alone breathing the fumes...

  18. Outside driveway job with a tarp overhead. Where I live I shoot in the morning before the wind kicks up. Wet down the surrounding area first. I use single stage to keep it simple. Lay enough paint on to cut and buff. Won't win Best Paint but everyone that sees it exclaims "You did that?" DSC00387.JPG

I have heard that guys use a small shop vac to supply fresh air. Mount it outside, run a hose inside to a gas mask. Polish surplus gas masks are like $20 at milatary surplus places.
Here is an auction listing. http://www.ebay.com/itm/US-M-Gas-Ma...927?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item3a9747db17

I painted the truck in my avatar with bc/cc in the shed behind me in the pic. It was the first time i had painted bc/cc and that was done in 1998. it is still looking good with a few chips and scratches.

  23. image.jpg I've painted three cars inside my 21 x 21 garage. I wear a 3M charcoal filter mask. I don't ever want to paint in such a small, ill equipped space again. The driveway works much better.

I painted a Model A front fender in my driveway once and about two weeks later I got a visit from the EPA police. These guys do NOT have a sense of humor. He gave me a written warning and told me if he comes back it is a mandatory $2500 fine. I get along great with all my neighbors, they all come over and borrow tools and I weld things for them, so I don't know who blew the whistle on me but I am done with painting in my driveway!

that's rough I hear the guys out in cali have to go though all kinds of BS where I am no one give two s***'s most of us never used a respirator painting or doing body work. I don't really like the idea of painting outside my bad enough my current O/T daily driver was painted in a barn and is nothing but orange peel by its prior owner(also has a lot of bondo that should not be there) my outdoor rattle can job on the lower door, quaters, rocker came out better

  27. Has anyone used the dupliu color paint shop lacquer I am doing a gas pump for a charity auction and was thinking about painting it in my garage with that paint.
