I remember the Lee Karts with the holes drilled in the sides of the magnesium frame. Those were the day's when the I.K.F. was the only racing body so we were all members. My wife keeps asking why we have I.K.F. magazines in boxes since the early 60's. Once the World Karting Association started we joined that because in those day's both groups put on many of the national races. I still have all the old MC stuff they used to give us back in those day's for running their engines. There were banners, shirts, helmet bags, and a lot of other stuff they had. My mehtanol A-OPEN Light Hornet had twin Tillotson carbs on a 91-b1 engine. We ran Bridgehampton, Watkins Glen, Summit Point and Thompson Speedway most of the time. Remember the old Bystrom Heat gauges we used to strap around our waist? Jim Hill
That is the year that Tom fell and tore his hand up . We always care a basic med kit with when we race. My wife doctored Toms hand for him . We liked Tom so much I sent him a AH58 Power Products motor for a kart project he talked about. It bet the motor burned up in the garage fire . Jim I would like to see pictures of the goodies that McCulloch used to give away.
From North Tx. Karts website, NTK will host a vintage kart show and swap meet this Saturday from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. ADMISSION IS FREE AND PRACTICE IS FREE Some of the vintage karts are expected to take to the track. See you there.
My 1966 Mustang JR go kart is in a 2015 Mustang commercial. I changed the trim to 1965 trim since it is the 50th anniversary and had to make adaptive pedals that moved them back 12 inches so the kid could reach them to drive it. It is competing against other commercials to see what one is gets the most likes on Youtube. Please like and share so that it makes it to TV
Will do! For those interested: there is a go-kart and minibike swap meet coming up October 11 in Keller, Texas.... I know, that's the same day as Temple Day of the Drags...
Restoring vintage karts is really becoming very popular with clubs and groups all over the country right now. Even racing vintage karts is cool now. Jimbo
Yup, these are the coolest low flying rides out there........most F1 drivers started with these scoots. I've wanted to put in a track on my property and buy a couple to tear around on.
This might be an early MTD MudBug. My Dad bought one about 1970 from Western Auto. I am working on mine- pic took two weeks ago of my daughter checking it out at my buddy's shop. Posted using the Full Custom H.A.M.B. App!
Was that lay down kart a Margay Panther? Looks like the old Airheart brakes. Only thing missing is the old Brystrom Heat gauge that we used to strap around our waist. I had a few lay down karts over the years but I sold all the equipment to go back to sprint kart racing. Back in the 60's if you were racing lay down karts on the east coast you raced at places like Bridgehampton, The Glen, The old V.I.R., Summit Point, and the Loudon in N.H. hope I did not forget any other tracks. There simply were more sprint kart tracks located within a few states from home so we made the change. Jimbo
Clone of cap'n Jack Mcclures Turbonique rocket kart Candy red rupp dart kart with twin 580's Go karts hanging on the wall
Late 50's Track Rabbit I picked up last fall. A bit of a mess currently apart waiting for better weather to go back together.
Hi new guy here. I actually joined because I was googling info on a kart I bought and cant identify and found this thread. Its driving me crazy that i cant find the make. Its made really well. Solid kart. And that floor pan decal is intriguing. I feel it must be a karting club. Ive come close to matching it as a Sears Fun Kart. Close but no match. Help please!! Haha [/QUOTE]
This may be the best kart track ever to exist! The World's International Karting Association (TWIKA) track built in Cape Girardeau, MO. Sadly only one championship race was ran there in 1961 before TWIKA folded up. We ran on the track several times at locally organized sprint races until 1967 when it was sold out of bankruptcy...1/2 mile with 18 turns! Constructed in 1961 at a staggering $150,000 cost!! ($1,173,065 in today's money!!) Brought $7,500 in '67 at the bankruptcy sale!! Please read the attached article....Good reading!! Very interesting as why it was forced to close along with money troubles....Joe (raced '60-'63 mostly in the Mid South with Lakeland Speedbowl near Memphis being our home track...ran a Leecart with full house MC20..methanol, A Super, Jr. IKF sanctioned..won the Mid South regional championship in '63) See previous post (page 12) in this thread for pics, etc..... http://www.semissourian.com/blogs/flynch/entry/34960/
A highschool friend of mine had one very similar called a Trisport but it had foot pads on the front fork and a 3 cyl. triple carb snowmobile engine. SCARRY FAST!!!! no speedo on it so to find out how fast it really was we drove beside him on a country blacktop at 80 mph! when he stopped he said he still had throttle left but was scared to go any faster.
Joe, you've been running around a long time. In '60 I was in kindergarden. Good to see you're still in there!
