    Heres a pic of my Australian 1956 Dodge Coronet. We were a bit behind the US cars, mine is the same body as the US 1953 Plymouth with the Dodge front sheetmetal.

    I brought this home a couple weeks ago. Aspen front end, 360/727 sitting in it, 7 1/4 rear end will be replaced.

    If the 360 isn't built up the 7 1/4 might hold up. They were used behind 318/904s. I'd wait n see.

    There's still plenty to do on it before I worry too much about the rear axle. Mopars are new to me so I looked on some other forums and that axle seems to get no love.

    You'd be better off with an 8 1/4 or 8 3/4 if you build it some, but if it's a late 70s lo po motor it may work. Emphasis on may. Won't work with a 400 too much torque. Volares with 225 slant 6 & stick had 8 1/4 but 318/904s had 7 1/4. Has the car been driven with the axle any? or not @ all?

    If the 7¼ is properly installed I'd run it until it fails. Swapping it out later on doesn't cost anything today and gives you time to find one.

    The engine and trans are out of a mid 80's truck and the engine has been gone through once before but l don't know if it was a stock rebuild or more than that. The car hasn't moved on its own with this setup and needs wiring, a driveshaft, and quite a bit more before she's a driver. If I swap the axle sooner not later, I do the brake lines and driveshaft once.

    Couple of questions, do you know what the chrome side trim spear is from?
    Satin paint is expensive to ship in Canada, what did you use?

    Its an Audi metallic-blue with flat clear,side trim is lowered -55 but the "tip" is from something else i guess

    Agreed, you can start with it, but put it on the list of things to change. When I was 18 I had a 77 volare with a plain 2bbl 318 and I exploded my 7 1/4 and shot parts out the case....It was common. (this was circa 1986)

    Yeah, after reading up on these axles on a couple Mopar forums I decided to not put any faith in it. I'll change it before the car hits the road.

  17. Probably the best bet...the variety of 9" or even 8" Ford rears that are available goves you even more options...

    I've got an Explorer 8.8 in my roadster, strong, plentiful, inexpensive. I'm going to check into one of those when the time comes.

    Found this site searching for Info on my new addition!! Excellent resource for 55 - 56 Plymouths!! 1300 Miles later she arrived last Saturday!! Greetings from Northern Alberta Canada EH!!

    Gorgeous car! When I was formulating ideas before starting work on my '56, I had selected that color as first choice. I later decided to go with Fury colors, but that is beautiful.

    I just figured out I have 7 new pistons for a 1955 260 Plymouth V8, that are factory .030 over pistons. 3.59 diameter.Don't know if anyone wants them or not.And of course, they are a polysphere type as Plymouth never had a 1st generation Hemi.
    How's the 2 speed work behind a bigblock. I know it's rare only 2 or 3 years made, but I can't remeber what the advantage was with the powerflite, infinitely variable? I had a 318 in a 59 fury that I put a big cam in. cant remember the stock torque converter giving me a hard time...

    Backup light mod for 1956 Plymouth and Plodge.

    In most cases when you get your 56 the backup light lens will be broken from the farmer helping you load your car with his fork lift tractor (whoops).

    When I started looking for new lens, the only ones available where reproduction ones at $ 40.00 each, but the listing said not for wagons, and when I asked why, the answer was less than enlightening. Plan B, I remembered from a past life that an aftermarket back up light looked very similar, so out with the measuring tools and internet catalogues.

    Turns out the Grote 62021 (Chrome-Plated Bezel) or 62011 (Gray Bezel) with the bezel removed was very close to the same OD as the 56 and that is what I used. ($ 26.00 pair)

    I see today lens from 20.00 a pair (used) to almost $ 200.00, to late, I’m done!
    My Suburban must have been the economy model; taillight lenses but no wiring or bulbs or sockets, the Grote unit comes with a base, a socket, and bulb (soon to be replaced with a LED) that with a little grinding fits right in.

  27. Last weekend I brought home a '56 Coronet Suburban 2 dr station wagon. V8 w/ Powerflite. Salvage yard car from New Mexico. All the glass had been shot up. Much work ahead.
