We built a tube single plane years ago with poor results. Geoff learned a lot about fuel distribution in the mean time and this time the single plane out performed the dual plane. Ted (Tedd) has wrung out all the existing 3-2 and 2-4 intakes on his dyno so we know what is possible with them. Some of them run pretty good but nothing that would work for this project.
I hate to say it, but I'm getting older and wondering if an automatic might be the better choice behind that Y-block for me..... What set up would you recommend that would work well ??? Thanks Terry
Terry, I'm still using a 3speed std. behind my bobtailed Ford 292Y in my 28A roadster, but got to admit my son's 23T with it's 350/350auto really dose drive smoother at my older age as well. Even if I could ever find a little later ford 3speed with full sinkro vs only 2n3,it would be good to have autotranny,guess I been driving it so long now it an't gonna happen.
For racing a Y Block a C-4 is the best choice.. Lots of race prepared ones available for any power level.. Relatively easy to adapt to a Yblock
The Y- Block shootout in Columbus Ohio is coming up here real quick... There will be some nice cars out there. Any of you guys in that area should get out there and check'em out. Royce might be able to jump in here and give the exact day.

Congratulations John, well done. Very impressive numbers. For those who care about such things, 7000 shift points are easy for a Y block. I used forged pistons, HD rods from John, an Isky 505T cam, and iron heads ported at home. I did not have a scatter shield, so I held it down to 7 grand when I raced the 130 club at Bonneville. It approached 7 so fast, I think 7800 to 8,000 was there had I big enough grapes to try. As it was, I had to drive the car home 1650 miles. I did this four times, had more fun than a geezer should be allowed.

Terry, unfortunately the Y-Block Shootout was over the Labor Day Weekend in Columbus Ohio. As far as automatic's for drag racing the C4 is the trans of choice for the Y-Block.. Flat-o-matic makes the adapter that most people use for Y-Block to C4. transadapter.com has AOD adapter. Wilcap has the adapter for GM transmissions to Y-Blocks.
Our other Y-Block powered car was at Famoso over the weekend. John Hildebrand's 31 Model A Coupe, 343 inch. Best time 10.12 @ 127.5 @ 3800 ft DA
2 seasons and 2 dyno sessions and it runs like a top. We might throw a set of rings at the end of this year for luck.. Nice job a Famoso this weekend John Hilde' took the coupe to two finals.

3800 ft DA is the Density Altitude.. Its a correction factor that you use to gauge the cars estimated performance when your jetting the car or setting your dial bracket racing.. Famoso is around 650ft true elevation. If it had been 60 degrees that day and the humidity was low the DA would have been around 650ft.. The temprature was 103-106 that day so it make the air quality worse at the same altitude. Simply put the weather was scrubbing 1.5 to 2 tenths off the ET.

With that much compression, what do you do to the center cylinders that you don't blow the head gaskets? That's the problem I always had when milling the heads. But with more compression those ol' Y-blocks would really run!
Single plain manifolds will usually not make more part throttle tq, or make more tq below 4000 rpm, usually. However motors with enough airflow and cam to make pk tq above 4500rpm the single plain will usually win.
The decks on the aluminum heads are much thicker than the OE iron heads. We are using steel shim head gaskets with head studs on both engines. So far so good
