The zipper developed some serious left front wheel hop at 55 MPH. Spent the day swapping the front tires and balancing the wheels and the drums as a single unit. Also changed the bolts in the friction shocks. Now, I have wheel hop on both front wheels. Has to be the shocks. Are they too loose or too tight? Thanks in advance for your thoughts,

  5. Denis, probably too loose.
Suspension should move if you step up on bumper, then move back once you jump off.
Keep tightening until it doesn't, then back it off a little.

Is going over head valve (e..g. Roof ) on a banger all that it is cracked up to be? What are the benefits? what are the drawbacks?

  9. It all depends on the intended purpose of the car and your wallet.
Pro's more power, speed and potential.
Con's cost and always remember, the light that shines twice as bright lives half as long.

What sort of power do you normally get from an off-the-shelf OHV conversion versus a high compression head ??

    Too loose.

Mine did the same thing. I replaced the friction shocks with newly rebuilt A Houdile shocks and it got worse. I put the friction shocks back on and using a torque wrench on the tension bolt, I gradualy tightened them until the hop went away. You might play with air pressure in the tires too.

Replacing a stock flat head with a high comp. head on a stock engine does not net you very many more HP. To take advantage of the higher compression, you need to change the cam and carb, A 6:1 head with a mild cam and single 2 barrel carb on an otherwise stock engine will net about 60-70 HP. More mods including bigger valves, more cam, comp, and carb. can get 90-100 HP.

With the right OHV head, cam and carbs you can get 90-125 HP.

  15. My car weighs 1500 lbs. I checked a tubular shock with a fishing scale and it had 20 lbs resistance
so I set my shocks to that. I use 2 Bellview washers face to face for tension. Works !

I'm planning on leaving @ 1:00 am Friday morning and taking 15 all the way. I know Ely is less traveled, but my thoughts were that at the time I'm traveling traffic shouldn't be a problem.

I guess I'm looking at a banger that has the nuts and bolts to keep up on highway. I see that there is lots of different heads developed over the years for T, A, B & C blocks with over head valve to over head cam. Is going that route just nostalgia or have a functional purpose?

  21. Nostalgia is a reason for it, mainly it is about power underfoot.
Crazydaddyo above answered your question, good conservative HP numbers.
IMHO, the OHV has a better efficiency potential than a side valve motor.
If you intend to drive it like a touring car, the Miller High Speed is good, very good.
If you intend on racing, look for a 4 port head (intakes) like a Riley or Cragar 4 port.
Keep in mind that these motor were built around 40HP. If you bolt a 4 port head on a stock bottom end you will see the internal parts without getting your hands dirty.

Don't get me wrong, I have done a couple side valve motors that hold there own and pull the OD very well on the highway in a full bodied car.

One last note, there has never been a "C" motor in the A/B series which came after the T.

John, very nice motor you have pictured above! What have you done to it to get it to that point of construction and what do you need to get it running? I am sitting here watching the movie, "Boys of Bonneville" and I might run away from home and camp out this weekend! Miss the salt!

  23. Start making excuses now for being gone this next week or so, I am.
Thanks, this picture is a couple years old now. This one is running and will be in Utah next week.
Last year had problems with fueling at Bonneville and in May this year ran 139 at El Mo.
The build on this one is pretty extensive and I have a new build in the works that is more complicated.

I have plenty of build pics that I can show you, sic motor porn if you are into that sort of thing.

Working on getting my B engine back in the A. I needed to re-babbit the rear main cap and then scrap it in. I got all that done, now I noticed that the rear slinger has been machined off and is the same diameter as the main journals, 2.000. I got the two piece neoprene/cork B rear main seal kit and I realized that the instructions on the seal kit call to machine the rear slinger to 2.35"/2.34" does anyone know who make the gaskets for 2" crank diameter?
