We're going to be driving our Flathead Powered Deuce from Upland, CA to Bonneville in the next couple weeks. We started prepping it for the trip by putting a hood on it (never had one before) and we're currently making a top for it. (don't care to bake in the sun). We've made the trip before many times, but this will be the first in a Roadster. I'll be updating here as much as I can, but will also document the trip on our Facebook Page www.facebook.com/stokershotrodfactory I'll have lots of photos as well as some video from a GoPro. We'll be arriving (hopefully) for the Cruise Night at the Nugget Saturday Night and will be on the salt Sunday. Hope to see some of you there. Here's a few pics of the car.
Cool - even with hood, hope that there are filters in carb's scoops. going to do any anti-salt rust prep to body, frame, etc?
looking forward to lots of updates for us that cannot attend but will love the vicarious trip. We are depending on you.
Good Luck Terry. I know you will make it as you have many times previously. Where did you get that car or is that the body you just picked up?
Have fun and post often in both places for us who are riding along on the net. Remember the focus of going to Bonneville is to watch the racing and not just pose in the parking lot at the casino.
Hey thanks Lynn, this is the body we picked up at GNRS and the chassis from that 4-door we had. I'll be posting here and on Facebook as often as possible. If anybody sees us up there, stop and say hi. Posted using the Full Custom H.A.M.B. App!
Seriously consider prepping for the rust. It sounds fun until you see just how concentrated it is out there. At the very least, spray a coat of WD or any sprayable lube under there, spray well before coming home and do the old sprinkler trick when you get home. Drive safe, carry an extinguisher and have a blast on your journey! Posted using the Full Custom H.A.M.B. App!
Great Looking Roadster. Have a safe trip and enjoy the SALT! Just liked your FB page....Very Nice Shop!
Patina you get while on the salt isn't exactly fake, it's just that you get 10 years worth in one week. Too bad it gets into places you wish it didn't.
I couldn't think of a better way to get there! As far as prep, we usually spray the bottom of the car with ATF through an old siphon paint gun. It works pretty well and definitely limits the severity of the rust. And as far as the clean up, we wash the car down thoroughly and then place a fountain style sprinkler under the car. We slowly move the sprinkler up the car one section at a time over the course of a day. It really flushes out any left over salt. See you out on the salt!
I guess if it's ok to spray ATF all over the bottom of your hot rod, it would be ok to drive it on the salt!
No rust prep for this car. It'll just get hosed off after the trip. We've got the top pretty much built. Just needs to be covered, which will be done early next week. everything else is ready. We have a friend driving his beater '40 PU going up with us. We'll be taking hwy 395 to hwy 6 up through Tonahpah. It should be a fun drive.
Just got the top finished and ready to head out saturday morning. We're gonna keep our eye on the conditions and hope the place dries out for sunday.
