This was taken way back in 1962 on my first ever trip to the drags at Connecticut Dragway.

Not sure which engine they are but with front mags and equally spaced exhaust I'm guessing Ford FEs.

It is hard to tell from the picture, but I'm wondering if it is the Jack Chrisman twin aluminum Pontiacs? The chassis might be a Dragmaster, which I think is what Jack ran...anyone else?

It is Jack, here is another picture of it, taken at Atco, NJ, either '62 or '63, from the Dragmaster Facebook page

Shows what I know, I thought Pontiacs had siamesed exhaust ports. Were they custom cast?

Not the aluminum ones, they, like the aluminum Buicks, had indivdual exhaust ports, these were F-85 motors, they were only 215 cu in, made between '61-'63. While they were small, they were very light weight, 320 lbs (compared to a 51-57 Chrysler at over 800 lb). I think Pontiac gave them to Mickey Thompson (who Jack was driving for) to promote them, but I'm not sure on that part.

Jeep Hampshire also ran injected versions in his Hampshire & Steen Herbert-sponsored car...Jeep asked me to bring him an Olds F-85 block to the drags at San Gabriel, and I showed up with what I thought was an Olds block, but Jeep quickly schooled me: That's a Buick block, the top row of head bolt holes is different. "Shows what I knew!"

If you lived in Southern California in the '60s, or were stationed there in the Navy, etc, you might have heard about the Blue Fox. But since this is a family-friendly show, we need not go into detail...but when you see pictures of this Anglia gasser, you can only smile knowingly:

Romeo Palamedies (sp??) car at Bakersfield, not sure who is driving, maybe Pete Ogden. this car would go on to get nice paint and a Potvin blower. This and the above photo from George Klass.

I don't know whose dragster this is, looks like a Northern California track, maybe Fremont? The era is probably the really early '60s, because the driver is wearing a leather driving suit, so this was before aluminumize fire suits.

This is the Hampshire car I was referring to, now with blowers. Chet Herbert's Chrysler push car complete with hand controls is behind it

"The driver looks like Richard Rea, and the smog and the telephone poles on the ground behind the fence could be Pomona even though nothing else in the picture backs up those thoughts for me." Tom J.

"Richard Rea’s gas dragster. Richard at rollbar. Fred Crow looking on (flattop). Pomona." - Rod Mc

"Definitely Richard Rea and Fred Crow (I was a partner with Rea in another car and see him yearly at CHHR)." - Bud R.

"Richard Rea sold this chassis to Fred Farlinger and Dick Hayes of Turlock, CA in ‘61. When they got it home, they yanked the motor out of Fred’s Corvette, installed a Schaller quarter speed cam and Hilborn stack injectors and went racing. This car and the Albertson Olds were unique at the time because the top chassis tubes had been removed by Rea & McEwen, leaving the large diameter lower tube that was standard on a K-88." Bob B.

  17. Here's a pic I took in 63 or 64 and can't remember if it was Spokane or Portland but I always liked it even with the drag link missing.......and I know its not in motion.....

I can't identify either the altered or the track, but it is really a piece of work, lots of effort to fill in where the fenders were...anybody know anything about it?

Keonig and Sundin (probably spelled both wrong!). The track looks like Pomona. They ran a flathead and later a Chrysler. Notice that the sponsors are Reath and Mailliard, who partnered in a speed shop in Long Beach until December 1956, when both went their separate ways. Joe Mailliard first went to Lakewood Muffler and later started his own shop, while Joe Reath renamed his shop "Reath Automotive" at 4th & Cherry in Long Beach. It may still be there.

I don't know whose competition coupe this is, but it is too good to miss. I'm not sure of the track either, maybe really early San Fernando?

A couple of shots recently from George Klass:

    2762189.jpg

This was also on Don Ewald's site. It's a backwards Buick, intake is exhaust, and vice versa. It took a lot of work to do this conversion (imagine explaining to a cam grinder that you want a backwards cam!). Blower feeds into the "exhaust ports." The frame looks pretty well engineered. I do not know who did this conversion but guess that it did not perform to expectations, or others might have done it. I do recall a "backwards" flathead in an old Hot Rod or Hop Up, but this is the first overhead (and maybe the last? if anyone knows of more, post here)

Coleman Brothers, from Maryland. This as I recall was a Scotty Fenn car, note that the front axle is similiar to the K-88. The story I heard is that Scotty left California for Maryland, and this was one of his first experiments when he landed in Maryland. Scotty was a real innovator, building a version of Kenny Ellis' "Trigster" and the Ted Cyr sidewinder. They didn't always work (Ted's sidewinder as a example) but the above car apparently did work. I understand that it has been found and restored.

Ok, one in motion, early Peters and Frank at Lions. I'm not sure if Bob Muravez was driving by this time, Kenny Safford also drove this version. Don't know what happened to the injector scoops?
