I have always said that the way you differentiate between an amateur and a guy that know his business is the detail that reflects on a build.

When I look at guys that build really nice cars, whether they be period correct or just really nice cars for customers, the attention to detail always catches my eye.

Post up some pics of things you do to finish off your engine bay and mill.
My weird fetish is removing casting flash before assembling an engine. It started when I was in high school and had no money. I would polish on my bare block until it looked like a new nickel……I had plenty of time and no money. The sickness has carried over for 30 years along with the lack of funds.

this is my very first build (amateur) but I've learned I have OCD (I think). So the details are not from experience but from the "labor of love"...I will be starting a build thread so you guys can be the judges

The Olds Rocket in my '55 Chevy. Disguised to look like a Chevy. Block, bell housing, and transmission ground smooth. All the cap screws for the carb top plates are stainless steel hex head and chucked in my lathe to a stilleto cut. Polished ARP fasteners throughout. Project close to completion.

I'm almost embarrassed to post this, but the '64 C-10 I did for "Endlessearth" here on the H.A.M.B.
The idea was to keep a humpy 355 looking sedate and somewhat like a factory H.P. version. I just rubbed on EVERYTHING to make it nice. grants truck3.jpg

I love the stuff you can't see or is very hard to detect. For instance, on my friend's Street Willys that is set up to look like a race car - it has a race car looking interior - stripped - nothing there - just like you'd expect on a race car. What you don't see is a hidden firewall - keeping all the defroster ducts out of sight. Unless he told you about it - you'd never know.
I do similar things on my stuff including my dragster - I am always amused when someone notices something subtle on my dragster and asks about it - although it happens very rarely. You'd really have to be detail oriented to notice that my valve cover nuts are 1/4" and not 5/16" (5/16 on 1st 1/4 inch 1/4 the rest of the way - no struggling sliding covers over the studs) or that my fuel tank doesn't appear to be vented - in the 6 or 7 years I've had the car done - no one has ever picked up on that one! The steel inserts I put in my aluminum air cleaner (don't want aluminum shavings in the motor). Bolts used as bulkhead fittings, brake fittings or rotating nuts used to activate switches, the list goes on and on - some for fun others for practical reasons.

It doesn't have to be flashy or fast to look good
