When I first heard of the Custom Car Revival in Indianapolis last year I knew I wanted to go. However, the dates last year didn’t work out and I missed the inaugural event. After returning from this year’s event, I don’t think that I’ll make that same mistake again.

    Leaving home on Wednesday Evening

Wednesday evening my girlfriend, her son and I loaded up in my 63 ½ Galaxie and headed out on our trip to Indy. Planning to only put a few hours in before meeting up with some friends from Colorado we headed east. Lucky for us my father was headed west on I-70 at that same time and invited us to have some BBQ with him. After that delicious detour we made our way up to St. Joseph, MO for our hotel. A drunk driver nearly ran us off the road, put himself in the ditch and then passed us on the shoulder, we called 911 and turned his plates and car description and peeled off that highway for our hotel.

Thursday morning we met up with Roger and Dan Jetter and Dave and Chris Pareso from ColoRODo and we headed east on highway 36 towards Indy. Highway 36 is known as the shortest route from Denver to Indy according to a sign in Norton, KS along the route. They had followed the highway from Denver to St. Joe before we joined the caravan.

The drive was a long one but fun. I’d been down much of that stretch before so nothing new for me to see, but my passengers had not so there was some excitement in showing a 6 year old the Mississippi River and other sites of interest.

Finally later in the day we arrived in Indianapolis at the host hotel. Some traffic had slowed us down and I had to turn the heater on full tilt boogie to keep the car from overheating but we made it. The cars in the parking lot for Thursday night alone were breathtaking.

Ray’s Buick was once a 4 door. This beautiful Kustom is about 30 years old at this point and still looks like a fresh build.

Yes sir! It was a blast! I went a lot over budget so I may have to skip the show in Tulsa on the 28th, I don't know that I'll have gas money to get there.

Thanx Travis...it was great running Highway 36 with you...hope we can do it again sometime...and thanx for being my "taillights" when my brake switch went south...we got a bit wet from St. Joe to Hannibal but Rain-X STILL works better than wipers...!!!

Love the pic of my Caddy under that cool bridge...

Oh, here's a pic of that sign outside of Norton, Kansas (look between the two Caddys)...why it's in Norton I have no idea...it should be at the start of Highway 36...!!!

Very cool. That sign's placement made me wonder when I saw it. I guess that folks that are driving from Denver to Indy may need encouragement that they made the right path right about at Norton, KS :)

It was great following you and Dan and hanging out all weekend. Glad that you guys made the trip, Lizzie and Ad say hi!

The parking lot of the host hotel was full of kustom kool.

Friday morning we headed over to the Indianapolis Motor Speedway for a tour. The Museum was $5 to get in and was amazing.

From the parking lot of the Museum on to the inside there were awesome rides everywhere.

To see more of the images from the museum go here, they aren't all traditional hot rods or kustoms so I won't post them here.

  21. Wow. Cool looking event. Wish I had been there. My old car would have felt out of place with all the great rides, but I would not have cared. Thanks for posting the pics for us.

Scott Pavey’s “Candy Cane” is immaculate. I first saw this car in a video that Doug Reed shot at the 1983 KKOA Leadsled Spectacular when Scott was 16 and had just finished it’s first version. It was awesome to see the car still in his hands and still looking awesome.

[IMG]I first noticed this car at the Stray Kat 500 this year and a week later at the Pete & Jake’s Open House. Good to see it here in Indy.

Figured up our mileage last nite to and from Indy, from Denver: drove exactly 1100 miles going (Highway 36 all the way)...1180 coming back simply cuz we took a different route home, did some sight-seeing in Northern Missouri and Nebraska and missed the twin tornados in Pegler, NE, by about 75 miles south of there...!!! Glad we didn't venture any farther north that day.

Thanx for the great photos of all the cars there...it was one fantastic show...!!!
