I need a little help....Is a "banger" strickly a four cylinder? And is my 292 just considered an "inliner"? Or can the 292 be considered a "six banger"? What are the major terms used? Does a "banger" mostly have to be very old? I know there are some newer straight 4 cylinder race engines. Help set me "straight". Thanks, Gary

In my book Four Bangers are generally Ford T,A & Bs but I think any built iron block American 4 cylinder in a real hot rod could be called a 4 banger. In the Bonneville rules the vintage 4 class engines are American and pre 1935. Six bangers? Yes, we called them that in the 50s and 60s. I see no reason that a 292 could not be called that. I have called my 270 GMC a 6 banger. Usually I say, "It's just a six". Inliner is a newer term to me and I didn't use it much until I joined that club. I think they used that to have a term that didn't need numbers with it or because they didn't like the sound if "In A Rowers International". I'm sure others feel quite differently about this because where there are terms there are experts and nit pickers.:)

Six Ball, thanks for the reply. I agree with you totally. I just wanted to make sure that I was on the right page. Six Banger, is what we called them in high school. And if you had a six banger you were not too cool. This was in the mid 1970's when muscle cars ruled. Well, times have changed. Thanks, Gary

In '63 I had a '40 Chevy pickup with a built 261. It was the first "cool" six banger I owned. Stop light to stop light it was a beast. It out ran a lot of V8s. It ticked them off when I said,"It's only a six". They didn't know that was as fast as it went. You have to pick your quarry and your race course carefully.;) I didn't mention Bob Ruffi"s streamliner of the Spurgin/Giovanni roadster both powered by the same Chevy 4 banger. They drove the Ford banger guys nuts for years.

model style number 35-1209 is a 1935 built car...starting production in December 1934......the 35-1209 is a FISHER BODY STYLE number for a 1935.
Its not hard to take a firewall plate off a scrap body and put it on another so that the person can easily title it for selling. happens all the time.

IF the car has an stock frame that was X membered its a 1935 as only that year on this style had it, the 34 had a K member ....mike

]I know that Tim's car was built in Janesville WI and did not have a X member. It is registered as a '34.[/QUOTE]

Then it will be a 1934 with a 1935 fisher body firewall tag

If that was mine I'd make it mechanically sound and drive it just like that. Same with the '37 above.

Used a 2000 (or close) Grand Caravan (Dodge) middle seat from the local u pull it. We had to alter the back by, narrowing, and shortening. We wanted the folding function along with the reclining function . Still the upholstery shop got to me for $450. So $42.50 (cost) for the seat, half a days vacation time, 2 hours fabrication time, and $450 at the upholstery shop.........not a cheap seat but what do you do? Gotta have something to sit on. At least it's done.
