History Roadsters with filled wheelwells...?

Anyone have any pics of original hot rods with the wheelwells smoothed out?

 

Bob Sr.'s Roadster. Part of the family. Killer little car. I know it's newer but it works.

absolutely. I like how they left the reveal on the 31 and brought the filled section out to the edge...

 

I think they were smoothed off on the Heliker T, I certainly don't see any. My '26 is using a modified '25 turtle deck and I had wondered if it was going to look odd without wheelwells but I really like this example.

 

Definitely keep the molding or it looks like a bondo job. Here's an Almquist '32 and it loses all character without body lines.

 

Robert Stack's A had filled quarters, shown here in 1938;

 

in my mind in order to look right the car MUST sit low, as in the top of the tire needs to be even or above the relief for the stock wheel wells.

Richard Tregilus did a similar mod on his A (along with a belly pan), shown here in 1940

 

Just found this slightly larger version, courtesy of the AHRF;

 

IMHO, I never cared for the look,To me it appeared that someone didn't know whether they wanted a hot rod or a slicked up custom sports car look.

 

I personally do not like the look of filled wheel wells. I think it ruins the body lines of the car. But that is what makes this hobby unique people tend to do what they like and not what the masses like. Scott

 

Let's keep it historically focused, gentlemen...the OP asked for photos of original rods with filled wheel wells, not our opinions. My apologies to @thunderbirdesq if I have mis-interpreted the intent of this thread.

Peters-Quinn A coupe at Bonneville in '62;

Charles Scott's '29 A roadster (shown at El Mirage in '48), shows wheel wells filled and body lines removed;

i have been thinking about this alot lately . my 29 roadster is pretty rough in the wheel well / quarter area . i was thinking this mod would be neat after seeing it on a couple old roadsters but i really only like it on 28 29 's without a body line outlining the wheelwell i like the thought of temporary skirts made that fit in to smooth the side out for aerodynamics while on the lakes or salt ,maybe i'll try that first !!

 

I have learned to never say never. For me the stance and wheel combo has to be right to pull it off. Some of the examples work, but for me they work only because it is partially covered up because of the stance. Is the juice worth the squeeze? I suggest a photoshop approach first.

I think it looks great on the right car... namely a historically accurate competition car. I really like the look of the 30-31 on deuce rails posted above by nostalgia59, it's not as jarring as completely eliminating the fender line but still looks slick and race-ready... Screw all, I'm gonna do it. Thanks for all the replies folks!

It's not really a thing you did for looks, at least early on, but a way to make the car more slippery. And to me, that makes it look good.

 

Not a roadster, but AHotRods coupe... I don't know if it makes a difference leaving the reveals, but I've heard it called a coffin tail too.

 

If you look at my survivor roadster thread, my Deuce had filler panels made to cover the wheelwells. I had assumed they were made to cover the wounds made when it was channelled, now I am not so sure...

Gee I didn't know that we were not allowed opinions here any more.

Some of the "opinions" were damned good advice. For instance keeping the reveal to give the body definition. I agree but that obviously my opinion, it also depends on how the car sets, a highboy for instance looks better with the reveal and a lowboy in my opinion looks better without it.

I had lots of examples before I cleaned up this computer for retirement. Sorry for the lack of pics and if I have offended the OP in anyway my apologies.

 

Never said you couldn't have an opinion...just asked that we keep it content-oriented; this being a 'Historical' thread in the focused hot rod forum. Would be happy to discuss it with you further via private conversation.
