Got the templates made for the sides tonight and also cut the seat cut outs for the Pirelli webbing to be put in place.

Hahaha no mate, I've put the truck away for a few days as I need to get my coupe dialled in properly for next weekend, got a few bugs to iron out.

I'm surprised how many people have pm'd me about updates, didn't realise there was many watching this thread.

I think you underestimate the quality of your work and the entertainment value of the builds. Can't wait for you to hammer on the coupe... should be fun.

Managed to get back on the pickup last weekend, I had been fed up with kicking the wheels around every time I wanted to move it so first job was a steering column so a rummage through my scrap and I came up with a piece of 1.5" diameter stainless tube and a few offcuts of aluminium bar, I had some 3/4" round on the shelf so we were good to go [IMG]

First job was to dummy up with an old steering wheel and measure up [IMG] 28" needed and the bit I found was 28.5 [IMG] Trued up the ends in the lathe and I had an outer [IMG]

I had planned to use 3/4" needle roller bearings so I turned up a couple of bearing carriers in aluminium to be a press fit into the tube.

Next I turned my attentions to the inner shaft, I like to use 3/4"DD uj's so the end of the inner was machined with 2 flats on the mill.
and a groove for the securing bolt.

I machined up a decorative finisher for under the wheel mounting hub (which I forgot to photograph but is basically a 1.5" x 5/8 steel hub welded to the end of the inner)

Heres the finished column, not too shabby for an outlay of £15 ($20) including bearings [IMG] Next job a custom column drop.

Although I rarely look in on the HAMB, your updates always make me want to see what's new on your builds! Very nice work Steve, and you make it look so simple!

Yesterday I started on the column drop, I wanted something to match the brake pedal etc which are I beam styled, started with a boss for the column and added curved sides, the edges are all radiused to soften the look, I cut a cardboard infill panel with holes but i'm still thinking about the design etc, It might change.

Looking good langy I agree it's not really hard to make a column I made the one in my Willys pickup too only I used muffler pipe a 3/4" shaft a couple of bearings and opted for the speedway quick release hub adapter cause it makes getting in and out of the truck way easier for me

Nice work. I haven't been on the HAMB much lately but it was cool to catch up on your build here. I enjoyed your green roadster build a few years back and this one is every bit as cool. I am really liking the gasser builds. I am collecting parts and getting ready to build my 55' Wagon into a gasser. It is nice to see the tributes to the glory days of drag racing. I really enjoy the fabricating myself. I almost enjoy the building more than the driving of the cars. I just wish I had more time and tools to make everything I would like to. For now I just enjoy the ideas and inspiration from guys like you. Looking forward to seeing your finished product.

Steve - great work! I love watching your builds (wish you would finish the '26)

Just a thought on the column drop - what if you made the sides the web to the "I" and added flanges top and bottom, leaving the center of the drop open... if that makes sense.
