Technical 37 Ford tube front axle(drop)?

I know it the holy grail of some to have a '37 ford tube axle. Can they be dropped and look good, and safe? Have an eye on one, and wanted to look at different ideas about a front end.

Yea, I don't know that is an improvement, I think going with a Doane Spencer type frontend and the stock tube would look nicer.

 

I agree on the stock appearance. Just have never noticed any dropped ones, must be the reason.

 

How can dropping them improve their looks? Beautiful axles in stock form, even better in chrome

 

why drop a v8 60 axle when you can buy a drop tube axle cheaper.don't ruin a rare ford part that others would love to have,including me.

 

Last years AMBR had a dropped tube.

I wonder if you could drill a hole for a 1/8" pipe plug prior to heating and dropping then fill it with dry sand, drop, empty and then weld up the hole to make the drop not look so kinky? Sort of the way the tube buggy guys do so they can use the cheap harbor freight tubing benders.

After see this in the Rodders Journal, that did it for me. The next 32 has to have a '37 front axle.

 

Un dropped. You can't improve that axle. Period.

 

Cool axle indeed but will you run ugly 4 bars or improper bones or hairpin with it???

 

These were heavily used by circle track racers, probably before rodders even, and so frequently used with proper period 4-bars just as on the Grbowski and Ivo T-buckets...
Bars were built up from tie rods and tie rod ends...
On dropping, I agree that the drop ruins the lines and doesn't even give much lowering in return. If it's too high as-is with a top spring, note that most cars using it used a suicide type spring setup to get the low. I think its use on stock setup type early Fords with spring on top and crossmember where Ford put it is marginal in terms of possible lowering.

 

Dont know. Not big on 4 bars, but then I dont know what setup is best for that axle. Besides looking cool, it has to function well.

 

run an unsplit wishbone or hairpins for a traditional look and proper function.

What years of bones work the best? Or is the length just a visual esthetic?

 

I have some '37 Ford tube axles, found one at Turlock swap around noon for $15, had round spindles and '40 Ford juice brakes. It had sat there all day!
The others were more $, I've been lucky finding them.

I heard someone was reproducing them, stock appearing with the Ford shape, would be very interested in locating a couple, for saleable project cars.

In the '50s, Bell Auto Parts' Roy Richter stocked dropped tube axles, '37-'40 tubes with dropped ductile ends welded in, on an exchange basis. They were shaped to perfection, netted a 2-1/2" drop. Ads were run in HRM, (didn't Alex Xydias also sell them thru So-Cal Speed Shop at that time?)
'Super Bell' later imitated this process, but in a 'larger scale'...

 

I've never seen this. I too would be interested in seeing these repros.

I was really surprised to see someone 'repro' the '32 heavy. Not a 'perfect' copy, but one I could massage...

Horrible story: A bud of mine was up at the Mopar guy's digs 2 months ago, saw a Ford axle leaning up against the wall in the corner just inside the front door. "That axle for sale?" Mopar guy says, "Ten bucks if you want it,"
Larry gives the guy $10, pulls the axle out, it's a '32 HEAVY. Looked like N.O.S.
(Larry has a rust free '32 Three window to put it under, 392 Hemi, Squeak frame.

 

These being the 'Holy Grail' of all Ford axles, seeing one mangled causes me to cringe and grit my teeth. After years of praying, abstaining from sex and dirty thoughts, and remaining on the crusade, I finally found one; and after haggling and buying stuff I will probably never use as part of the deal, I have one. It's like having been knighted. Now, I can brag about it, and intend to polish it to a fine fare-thee-well and slather it with nickel and hang it over my bed while I await the dream of a perfect hot rod to use it on. Now let us pray.

How about this NICE dropped 37 V8-60 Axle ?
I have had many axles over the last few decades. From Original Cragar, early Bell Auto to Okie Adams.
Never had or seen another quite like this one.
Not sure if it is an original 37 V8-60 Axle dropped, or something Bell Auto or someone else made.
Either way. It's Beautiful and Rare.
