Take That Mrs. Lauren!

Take That Mrs. Lauren!

The December, 1953 issue of Rod & Custom Magazine features one of my favorite 39/40 coupes of all time. Doug Rice’s car (kind of a refined version of another favorite) was built to be low and stylish. When he drove the finished product to Bonneville in ’53, most folks didn’t expect much. They were shocked when the seemingly heavy custom powered by a streetable flathead Ford went 126 mph. That’s a scootin’ for a custom.

The above is a pretty cool story in its own right, but it’s not the reason I decided to write about Doug’s car today. Nope. See, my issue of Rod & Custom (secured at a swap meet some years ago) was owned by school boy with a dream. While sitting in English class one day, the boy decided to put ink to R&C. Here is what he came up with:

Someday I won’t be in English class. I’ll be at Bonneville racing Vic and the boys in a ’40 coupe (it’s actually a ’39 – ED) like this one. Only, mine will have a Desoto motor and transmission and white pinstriping by my friend Deke.

Take that Mrs Lauren!

Just grand, right? I mean if you step passed all of the bullshit… the egos, the personalities, the wants, desires, etc… we are all just a bunch of kids sitting in English class – are we not?
