Scotty’s Muffler Service Dragster

Scotty’s Muffler Service Dragster

Charles W. Scott (or “Scotty”) was the original owner of Scotty’s Muffler Service in San Bernardino, CA. He opened the joint with his wife in 1946 and used his business success to fund his racing endeavors. There were many… and you can find a lot of Scotty’s accomplishments sprinkled through vintage issues of Hot Rod Magazine and other publications. His passion ran so deep for automobile racing and hot rodding that he had a hard time letting go. As late as 1985, Scotty was still fielding drag cars and still running over 200 mph at Bonneville.

Scotty died in 2005 and a San Bernardino newspaper followed with a really great bio on his life. You can read it in it’s entirety here.

It can all be summed up by saying that Scotty was a devoted, passionate, and serious car guy. He grew up around great people, surrounded himself with great people, and lived a charmed life that most of us can only dream about.

Recently, a video surfaced of Scotty breaking in one of his early dragsters. It’s a silent film, but an important one. Take a few minutes. Read Scotty’s bio. Close your eyes and put yourself in his shoes. Got all that done? Now, watch this:

The world of traditional hot rodding is a pretty damned wonderful place. Stop and appreciate it every once and while and you get this feelings that we are in a golden age of our own at the moment. Never have so many that meant so much been so appreciated.
